On September 3, 2018, Ash Lynx was officially pronounced dead.
They said the blade entered through his sixth and seventh ribs. They said he bled out at a table in the library; that they thought he was asleep until they saw the blood pooling underneath him. That he’d died with a letter clutched in his fist. They said the lynx had finally fallen.
(It’s best not to believe everything you hear.)
Or: After being stabbed by Lao, Ash is placed into Witness Protection Program, and Eiji spends eighteen months in hell.

Ash is the type of person that likes to sleep in late. The only part he hates is waking up. It's a long, slow process, and usually takes a cup of coffee until he's anywhere near alive.
Eiji knows all this - he's slept next to Ash, opened the blinds every morning, and made those cups of coffee. It's their routine they've had for years, steady and familiar.
So then why the hell is Eiji shaking him awake on a Saturday morning?

All he could think of was how nice it felt to be with Ash knowing everything, at least for now, was alright.

"So are you two dating?"
William blurted out. Eiji looked up from the ceramic plate Ash was holding. Ash apparently had done the same, and you could see it in his expression like you can hear the scratching of a record while his thoughts came to a halt. His face then turned red and glanced over to Eiji, red as the ochre that was adorned on the caves of our ancestors, painted with ancient lives forever etched in the canvas that was their world then when it had not yet torn itself apart.
Anyway, in retrospect, Eiji should have known it by then, and yet some things were simply not obvious when you're in the field, six feet beneath the surface level, and just dying to crawl back to your bed from where you camped.
But that was for Eiji in the future to worry about anyway. At that moment, Eiji remembered wanting to laugh as he gestured at the ceramic plate in Ash's hand along with the ancient dirt they were knee-deep in, giving William a look that conveyed--you are literally here, deep in the mud, in the middle of fucking Italy. How are you asking me this?

We all know Ash's past and the hurt he had to overcome, in order stay alive in a world full of sickening antagonists. But what do we really know about Eiji's past? Maybe Ash and Eiji have much more in common than a surface glance can tell...and that's not necessarily a good thing.

After he testified as a key witness in a trial that changed New York forever, he gets immunity from prosecution in return which means all charges against him are dropped.He did it so that he could see Eiji again. But three year have passed and Eiji thinks he’s dead. He probably moved on and forgot about him. Still, he finally finds the courage to write him a letter. The New Year is a way to start over, right?
Will Eiji forgive him that he faked his death and give him a second chance?
The answer will reveal itself when someone stands in front of his door right before the new hear arrives.
