Prequel to the movie, spoiler free! But does have subtle hints/foreshadowing to dialogue in the movie. TW for homophobic slur, smoking and mild description of blood. It's a little spicy, but nothing explicit or overly sexual.

Maybe neither of them had, instead content to deny the truth before their eyes for the rest of their days because it was better than confronting the alternative. Except Scout had died, and Spy wasn’t able to keep on pretending for his last moments. A part of Jeremy was glad for it, despite the simmering rage and betrayal and hurt.
So when he tried to look God in the eye and tell Him that Tom Jones was his father... He couldn’t. Not really.
(Scout discusses his parentage with God, and stays dead for a little while longer. Well. A lot longer.
On the plus side, he gets to attend his own funeral reception.)
