Ilya took a long drag of his cigarette, eyes still not leaving Shane.
“Maybe staring is not bad thing,” Ilya said. “Maybe I stare because you are very pretty.”
Shane floundered before he could form real words. “Well. That’s stupid.”
“The staring? Or you being very pretty?”Or: A meet-ugly turned friends with benefits frat boy college au. Shane is convinced he’s nothing more than just another hookup on Ilya’s extensive roster. Ilya’s spent his whole summer plotting on how best to lock Shane down. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.
“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.
And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.
Just once. Just a single nod.
Why did he have to nod?
“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”
“Of course.”

Shane looks at the beautiful man again, struggling to wrap his mind around what he's hearing. Ilya's face is carefully blank, but there's a small trace of amusement in his eyes as he flicks away the ashes from his cigarette.
"Is better job, Leonid," he says, his voice smooth and deep with the same thick accent as Leonid and Vasily. "You can admit it."
Leonid mutters something in Russian, and the corner of Ilya's mouth lifts ever so slightly as his eyes shift to Shane. His breath catches, warmth spreading to the very tips of his fingers at being the sudden focus of his attention.
"How much do you make now?" Ilya asks, stubbing his cigarette out in an ashtray and rising to his feet.
At a loss for what to say, Shane watches as Ilya steps around the coffee table and gracefully buttons his suit jacket.
"Never mind," he says, waving off his own question. "I will pay you more."
