“I can’t lose you,” he whispered.
Charlie froze.
“I can’t.” Nick was crying again, hot tears running down his cheeks. “If something had happened to you tonight - if I was too late-” his voice teetered off into a pained whine, physically unable to finish his sentence.
“Nick,” Charlie breathed, a heartbroken expression on his face. “You didn’t lose me.”
Nick shook his head. “But I almost did. And I can’t - I won’t go through life without you. I love you far too much to do it on my own.”
Charlie’s breath caught as he stared at Nick with wide eyes.
“I love you,” Nick repeated, his voice hardly above a whisper. It was the first time that he’d ever said it out loud. Unable to keep it a secret anymore, not when it had been so close to Nick and Charlie becoming just Nick. “And I know I’ve waited too long to say it and I've ruined everything. I don’t expect anything from you, I just - I need you to know. My life has been so much better since you’ve been in it. You’re my favourite person, Charlie.”
“How - how long?” Charlie choked out. He was looking at Nick like he had two heads. “Nick, please. How long?”
