A pair of metal chopsticks was balanced on top of the bowl by thick, muscled fingers, and only then did the magical illusion of the cooking release Corbeau from its grip. He mustered all his remaining strength— which was pathetically depleted to begin with, this late into the night —to glare at his right-hand man, growling, “I need to finish that report before dawn, Philippe.”
“If you insist on pulling an all-nighter, the least that you could do is take a break to eat, boss,” Philippe sighed, standing firm in his stubbornness, even when those with weaker hearts would crumble beneath Corbeau’s scowl.
Or: Corbeau learned that, when life threw him a curveball in the form of dangerous portals to an alternate-mirror of his city, his best shot to save it was by letting his right-hand man support him.

It was warm, he could get clean and eat food, and most importantly, and despite his – admittedly half-hearted, at this point – protests, it was completely free. The company was nice, too, though Corbeau's dedication to keeping an eye on him was bordering on obsessive, as if he was afraid that L was going to disappear a second time, never to be seen again.
