“Do you ever regret becoming a Hero?” Tony asks again. “You’re seventeen, Pete. Normal kids your age are sneaking alcohol, getting drunk, and worrying about high school crushes.”
“You didn’t.” Peter comments, carefully pulling on a hoodie. Almost in slow motion.
Tony can’t argue with that statement. It was true. At seventeen, Tony had already finished MIT. Drank too much because his parents didn’t care. And had more one-night stands than she cared to remember. But at least he’d been alive.
“You could die out there,” Tony says. Not for the first time. But it’s the first time he says it directly. Meeting Peter’s earnest and innocent eyes with a stern gaze. “You know that, right?”
Peter fiddles with the edge of his hoodie sleeves. Something he’d done a million times before. The right sleeve was so worn, that it would soon fall apart completely. Just a string of memories. After a long moment, Peter gives a stiff nod. Confirming that he knew. That he went out there despite knowing, that tomorrow he might not come home.“Kid…”

Mr. Stark looks down at Peter, then back up at his flight path. Back down. “Of course, I’ll keep her safe kid. So will you, I’m sure.” He says. Peter isn’t sure he means it.
“Promise me,” Peter asks.
Mr. Stark sighs, his breath sounding like wind as it comes through the metal helmet. “I promise, Pete. I’ll keep your aunt safe. You’ve got my word.”

The breathless question is the first thing that flies out of Tony’s mouth as he looks over at the kid, flabbergasted.
The teenager is knelt there on the ground beside him, curls mussed and soot powdering his pale face. He visibly gulps down a knot in his throat, almost like he’s wishing he’s anyone but who he actually is.
“Um… I’m Peter.” Finally, the boy gets to finish the introduction that was so rudely interrupted earlier. “Peter Parker.”
Tony lifts his eyebrows and dips his head in a slow nod, never breaking the eye contact. “You’re my son?”
“I… guess so?”
—When Maya Hansen shows up at Tony’s mansion over a decade since they last met, she isn’t exactly lying about that thirteen-year-old kid in the car.
