Summary
The only times Nikolai has seen Kaz sleeping in the past three months has been when he’s stumbled into the house on some of the days that Nikolai doesn’t work, and immediately crashed on the couch in the living room a little after noon while on his lunch break. He has to wake up again less than an hour later, so it’s not like crashing on the sofa is even all that helpful in the short term.
But at this point, Nikolai figures Kaz will take what he can get, and if that means he’s taking the occasional cat nap instead of eating a midday meal, then it seems “so be it” is Kaz’s current philosophy.
Kaz has a doctor appointment tomorrow, though, after Nikolai has spent literal actual weeks trying to get him to set one up.
“Just find someone who will prescribe you a sleeping medication — in moderation, Kaz. Someone who knows which might actually be helpful; do not get anything off the street from anyone who does not have a doctorate in psychiatry. I’m serious, Kaz.”Or,
Kaz gets on a sleeping med that actually works for him, and subsequently asks Nikolai to do him a favor.

Kaz locks his door and window, closing the blinds securely. Now there’s no chance for anyone to catch him doing something as silly and embarrassing as using a mannequin for touching practice.Or,

Summary
Nikolai leans into his hand on the table in front of him, listening to other people talk about…something. It sounds like taxes or tariffs, actually. Which are both objectively boring as fuck topics.
His mind turns instead to Kaz Brekker. A far less boring subject to focus on. He’d been in Ketterdam on business not two weeks ago, and had taken the time to meet up with the Barrel boss. The entire time they’d spent together, Kaz had been teaching Nikolai how to pick a specific kind of lock. Nikolai can’t even remember the name of it; just how it looked and how frustrating it had been to try to pick.
Of all the locks to teach Nikolai to pick, the frustrating one doesn’t even make the top three of how important it is for Nikolai to have knowledge of. There are far more important locks to learn to pick.
Like, say, Kaz.Or,
Nikolai is booked and busy daydreaming about Kaz. What do you mean, he’s in an important meeting right now?

Kaz scoffs again as he gets out of Nikolai’s truck.
Nikolai follows him out.
Kaz works to stretch his slightly aching legs by pacing around a bit in the neighboring parking space.
Nikolai leans on the hood of the truck, watching him.
Kaz finally snaps at him about it. “What’re you looking at?”
Nikolai shrugs. “You,” he says simply.
Kaz frowns.Or,
Kaz and Nikolai are on a road trip to go threaten someone in person. They stop at a motel halfway to their destination, and have a soft cozy time there.
