Summary
Fights with Gansey are becoming less frequent since Ronan decided he was staying with them and never making an effort to leave. Adam wonders if it’s because Gansey doesn’t want to argue in front of him, or of it’s because of the constant chaos that seems to revolve around Ronan Lynch.
Adam's relationship with Gansey is fine. It's definitely not going to be improved by Gansey's best friend Ronan hanging around all the time.

I would 100 percent read Gansey's trilogy on Glendower because I've never managed to get into John Cowper Powys's hefty tome, and Morgan Llywelyn's take doesn't come out until 2023.

Summary
This is a story about a magician with a terrible history. The death of Adam Parrish's father after he leaves for college means a chance at closure with that part of his life, but he's not on the journey alone. At his side is a king, whose loyalty never faltered, no matter how much the world threw at them, or how many times they couldn't agree on how to live their lives.
This is also the story of a dreamer, who loved his best friends so much that he didn't dare risk losing them by asking for something they couldn't give. So kisses that could have been became kisses that never were, and Ronan Lynch tells himself he'll make his home a place they can return to.
They'll all come together again for Adam, even fierce little Blue Sargent, so he doesn't have to face his past alone. And while he works at closing those doors, he'll make his way into places where all the love Adam, Ronan and Gansey have built up over the years will finally have the space to bloom.

What is it about perfectly crafted Big Bang fics not receiving the attention and praise they deserve? Does too much come out too quickly for readers to appreciate all that creators are lavishing on them? This hidden gem of a fic answers the question, "What if 'Ronan [had] let out a breath, put the model [car] down on the bed beside him, and' simply taken another breath instead of kissing Adam, with everything else remaining as in canon?" At the very least, we now get to watch Adam navigate a charged conversation with Blue in which his friend is also his ex-girlfriend, and his current boyfriend's ex-girlfriend too. Furthermore, how this fic handles the continued resonance of a forgotten-on-a-conscious-level Noah in the lives of the surviving Gangsey is exquisite.

In the face of these currently trying times, I dream of a better, brighter world in which Intro to Lit students learning about nonlinear narratives read the Seeing Stars Verse instead of Wuthering Heights. What does this series have? Flashbacks! A prequel! Flashbacks in a prequel! What does Emily Brontë's novel have? Unappealing characters! Doing deliberately self-destructive things! For no apparent reason! Brontë should have written Pynch fanfic instead.

Summary
Adam Parrish had always been ambitious, but his carefully thought-out life plan had revolved around college, then grad school, then career. When he’d been desperate to get out of Henrietta, he’d never once considered adding going to the Olympics to that trajectory. He also hadn't expected to run into the angry, enigmatic classmate from high school - who he's never quite been able to shake from his head - once he's there.
Ronan Lynch needed a way to escape, and rowing gave it to him. Now he's somehow set to compete at the Olympic Games, and the last thing he needs is the beautiful, distracting boy he thought he'd never see again after high school getting in his way.

Bookmarker's Notes
There's so much to love about this brief glimpse into what I choose to believe is an alternate timeline in which Adam got into his first-choice college, that school was Stanford, and he and Ronan didn't even bother to try to make a cross-country teenage romance work, in part because Adam likes to tell himself he's broken free of Henrietta and made a new life for himself in which he's entirely his own man. Thus, is there anything more true to his character than reading sexual attraction as irritation and even dislike because whatever he hasn't planned for is necessarily negative? Perhaps I'm a curmudgeon, but I do enjoy fics that undermine the happily-ever-after found-family ending of TRC and are less idealistic about interpersonal dynamics: that is, love fades, distance and time erode friendships if outright conflict doesn't destroy them first, and not everyone is ever equally close to everyone else anyway. Plus, a favorite fic subgenre of mine is Adam demonstrating to surprised onlookers that he's not nearly as sheltered and uptight as they condescendingly believed him to be. In other words, let me live vicariously through practiced weed-smoker Adam.

Wanna watch two of Adam Parrish's strongest impulses, pride and lust, battle it out in an Aglionby dorm room? There's no reason that this fic couldn't fit in with canon. It just requires some judicious secret keeping from Ronan on Adam and Declan's parts. Some information is given out on a need-to-know basis, and Ronan simply doesn't need to know.

This iteration of Rodansey never feels forced or gimmicky. Instead, it comes across as natural, organic, and always entirely plausible, even to a reader like me, who doesn't normally seek out poly fics. Plus, grown-up Adam is a … Diet Coke drinker? I did not see that coming and hope that the promised sequel dives deeper into his incongruous beverage predilections, because what essential truth about Adam Parrish does his taste for Diet Coke reveal? Something, something embrace of artifice? A telling juxtaposition of sweetness and bitterness? A resistance to giving himself over to desire and pleasure without restraint? I simply must know.

I know that it is foolish to expect true justice in this fallen world, but it still shocks me that this fic isn't getting showered with attention. Just consider, for instance, the character-revealing power of the exchange between Adam and Gansey in chap. 5 in which Adam smugly declares that parenting isn't the hardest thing he's ever done, but it just might be the hardest thing Gansey ever does. His observation isn't kind, it isn't helpful, it isn't fair, and it isn't even necessarily true. Ultimately, for all of Gansey's born-to-the-manner advantages, he has had to confront his own mortality repeatedly before even turning eighteen, and that necessity certainly rises to the level of hard. Yet, Adam, despite all of his subsequent educational and professional success and personal fulfillment, can't ever fully let go of his resentment over his miserable childhood and adolescence. He clutches that grudge to his heart, and if those around him are lucky, it comes out as mordant humor, and if they're less lucky, it emerges as something harder to laugh off. What he endured has become a constitutive part of his identity, and he's never going to let it go, even with his dearest friend, because to relinquish it would be to his mind a betrayal of himself, all of which Gansey understands and generously accommodates, even if maybe he shouldn't.

I'm sentimental about this series because the first two installments in particular perfectly capture that potent sensation of falling fast and falling hard for someone, and then discovering to your stunned delight that they feel the same way about you. Late August 1995 really was a heady time.

It is hard to imagine a world in which I would lose track of the LA verse or that the author would need the drop-in-the-ocean validation of another random reader bookmarking this much-lauded series, but damn if I don't love these versions of Adam and Ronan just as much as the canonical ones, and I want to go on record saying so.

Summary
Ronan’s dream lights fell dim and whispered away from the windows as Adam stared at the ceiling. Tension wrenched tighter with each heartbeat, words stuck at his throat that would not leave him but had to. Guilt was persuasive, and Adam had gone long enough hiding this. Perhaps too long.
“I have cancer.”
The words came out like a breath, and Adam wished they would slip away as one.

I only ever started this fic because I figured that it would be so nakedly emotionally manipulative and maudlin that I'd read a couple chapters, roll my eyes in disgust, and move on, but then it ended up being unfairly good, and I read the whole damn thing. To date, it is the only fanfiction that's ever made me cry, and did I bawl or what?

This fic sticks with me because I'm just so confused! There are all these weighty glances between characters, but I have no idea what they mean, and I don't know if that's because I'm being dense or because all would have been revealed in the final projected chapter or something else entirely, but you can't beat this story for atmosphere.

Summary
“You can’t know that,” Adam said quietly. Someone and their cart rattled behind him, probably trying to get past, but he was two weeks away from a letter that would decide the rest of his life and was also in crisis about being in love with his best friend and the person behind him probably wasn’t either of those things. So he felt like an asshole but also kind of felt like he had earned the right to have a private conversation in the baking supply aisle for a few seconds.

If for no other reason, read this fic for the scene in which Hennessy jokingly offers Adam a cigarette and is surprised when he accepts it, with him essentially saying, "I'm a rural, working-class southerner. Of course I know how to smoke. Now watch me drag this cigarette down to the filter and not even cough. After all, it's where all the best cancer is."

Bookmarker's Notes
I love how the magic almost creeps up on the reader in this AU. Also, this fic cries out for a prequel that examines what happened in the aftermath of Adam and Ronan's senior year hook up, because it clearly didn't go as Ronan hoped, and I have to assume that Adam's to blame. So, what changed between then and when they ran into each other again after graduation? Was Ronan Adam's guide in emotional growth, just as Adam was Ronan's in this story?
