Loch Buidhe was a beautiful area. It’d been quiet, their first year here; sleepy, almost. Simon had settled wonderfully into domesticity, content to gorge himself on rest and relaxation and, on many occasions, John himself.
John itched from the need to be productive still, but their little cabin had proven to be more than enough to keep them both busy. Still, the town had that sleepy, quiet quality that made winding down with a trip out almost shockingly easy.
Now, though, he couldn’t even make trips into town without hearing the latest gossip. Be it parents or his coworkers or even the shopkeepers, everybody was on edge with every new case. Every candlelit vigil he spent watching people weep only reminded him of his disconnect. The sick, oily feeling that maybe he’d never adjust to civilian life if he couldn’t spare more than a few measly hugs and flat condolences never seemed to abate.
The end of the week couldn’t come soon enough.
