Gale blanched as he quickly sat up straight. “They do?!”
“Of course,” Astarion said smoothly, watching his friend squirm. “If you’re worried about making a fool of yourself, we could always practice first. Nothing to lose your head about." He sighed as if the thought wasn't something he'd fantasized about since that night on the roof.
The prince nearly toppled off the bed. “You mean… practice kissing? With me? And you?"
Astarion rolled his eyes, again, and shrugged. “It won't mean anything, obviously. Like learning your letters, or your dancing steps.” He sat up, eyes meeting Gale's and hoping the boy couldn't read into his desperate plea to accept.

Gale seemed to snap back to attention at the jibe, brushing a piece of hair out of his face. “Oh yes! Well, you’re quite brave to be ordering me around, for I happen to be a wizard of considerable acclaim. I enjoy the company of cats, books, and perhaps a pen. One could say I’m quite the poet.”

It’s the 1930’s in Baldur’s Gate, and Astarion has moved all the way from Neverwinter to start a new life, away from. The shadows of his past. He’s met with the sweet yet powerful wizard on puppet strings, and Astarion has to learn how to live in this new city as evil forces rear their head.

“We are in need of aid ourselves, perhaps you can travel with us until we find a healer,” said the purple one.
Just his luck. He was stuck in some kind of nightmare trip with the most dedicated roleplayers in the world.
Gale’s life is quiet and predictable, spent working at the library and having quiet evenings with his cat- when he’s not dealing with his insufferable neighbor, Astarion.
That is until he wakes up in a world of magic and danger, where he knows nothing and no one, except for one constant: Astarion is still there, sharper, deadlier, and just as much of an asshole.
Now Gale has to survive a story he doesn’t belong in, with no plan, no knowledge of magic, and no idea how to get home.

Gale and Astarion are engaged, but Astarion is dodging setting the wedding date. Gale tells Astarion they’re off to a “writer’s retreat”—conveniently omitting that Newleaf is actually Halsin’s group therapy camp for trauma survivors. Cue: summer camp chaos, emotional avoidance, sadboi shenanigans, and an in-progress romance novel that’s getting out of hand. There’s healing, there’s fighting, there’s a lot of sex (like really a lot, almost every chapter, sometimes more than once, lots and lots of emotional smut), and there’s at least one public meltdown.
Note: this is a sequel to Editorial Prerogative and Dedications. Best enjoyed after reading those, but I’ll drop a spoilerrific series summary in the Notes for chaos goblins and anyone who needs a refresher. Set a few months post-Dedications. Mostly canon-compliant. Smut is unskippable and plot-relevant—mind the tags and make good choices. Or don’t. I’m not your mom.
This was written for the Bloodweave Brainweave Discord Server's Gays of Summer 2025 event and hits quite a lot of the event keywords but was mainly inspired by "Summer Camp".

Be aware that this fanfic follows the storyline of the video game, therefore, contains *spoilers*.
Astarion moved through his tiny world in perpetual darkness. As a vampire spawn, he hasn't had free will or thought in nearly two centuries. After a fateful abduction by a mindflayer ship, he finds himself not only cut off from his vampire master's control, but able to enter homes uninvited and walk about in sunlight. "Someone has changed the rules..." With his new band of traveling companions, also infected with mindflayer worms, their unfolding adventure takes off. While he's sarcastic and standoffish with most, the vampire spawn finds himself unusually open with a towering druid elf called Halsin. And eventually, gives his heart to a long-winded wizard with secrets that may be even more dangerous than his own.
