Rumi knew the lesson she was learning was to embrace every flaw and all, to never change the way she was to fit another’s view because the people who truly loved her would stick around no matter who she was.
She’d spent years hiding. Dulling herself down, smoothing over the jagged edges so she wouldn’t be too much, too loud, too demonic. So she wouldn’t scare the people she loved.

The chains snap. Red light explodes as Rumi drops from the air like lightning.
In a heartbeat she was in front of Zoey, hand on her throat, breath ragged, gaze feral. Zoey doesn’t flinch. She only exhales, eyes glimmering with tears and something even deeper: trust.
Rumi’s body shakes in restraint. Her other arm curls tight around Zoey’s waist, pinning her there, close enough to feel every tremor of her pulse.
“I… I can’t control myself around you two,” Rumi whispers, her voice low and rough like smoke and velvet.
Zoey tilts her head back, a smile trembles as a single tear slides down her cheek. “So don’t.”
The dam broke. Rumi kissed her like the world was ending, like Zoey was air and she’d been drowning for days. Her lips were bruising, desperate, but Zoey kissed her right back, just as needy.
So don’t.
The words replay, and Rumi can’t take it anymore. She doesn't know where this night would end or what her demon would demand. But for now?
She surrenders.

Zoey was the most disguised—bucket hat, fake freckles, glasses that were definitely not prescription—but she still carried herself like a main character. She even insisted on walking slightly behind them “just in case someone recognized her gait.”
No one had. Their waitress called them “a cute group of tourists” and handed them specialty menus.Their table was on a rooftop patio, tucked into a private corner wrapped in string lights and soft music. Mira leaned her chin on her palm and smiled across at her girls.
“Okay, no demon talk. No fan talk. No stress. Just vibes.”
Zoey lifted her lemonade like it was champagne. “To vibes.”
