"The F18 soared across the open water, a few thousand feet above the hard deck. Buck pushed the plane past Mach 1 and was rounding on Mach 1.5, enjoying the roar of the engine and the steady vibration of the plane under him. He loved the feeling of flying; the strange part of him felt grounded the higher he went, more connected to himself the more altitude he gained.
The F18 responded beautifully to his every touch, going faster or slower with barely more effort than a thought.
Buck had brought an old polaroid with him in the plane, the one his dad had given him when he went off to basic flight training. He’d taken a few pictures during his time in the Navy, mostly of Bradley or the sky. He loved being able to send polaroids home to his dads."

Admiral Kazansky claps him on the shoulder, says he expects great things from him, and Jake’s smile is feral as the rest of his flight school cohort looks on in disbelief.
Hangman, they all say, like Jake’s entire personality was a long con, and he ranks first in class.
Rooster doesn’t look at all.

"Oh- Sorry, are you alright?" Tall guy apologises immediately as Tommy rubs at his forehead, tilting his head up to look at them.
The first thing he notes is the white mask (porcelain, maybe?) on their face, a black smiley face drawn on it. Then the very neon green hoodie they were wearing. Oh, that burns his eyes.
"Your hoodie looks like shit." He states in a matter-of-fact tone, fingers uncurling in his pockets. Green Man blinks at him, then wheezes, sounding an awful lot like a tea kettle.
"Do you have like, a breathing problem or something?" Tommy remarks, and Green Man wheezes even harder.
Or, Tommy is a werewolf. He runs away and happens upon Dream. Then Technoblade, Phil and Wilbur come along, and there’s also a pack of wolves in the woods nearby, isn’t that nice?

Which meant that when others started to disappear too, Dream wasn’t there to puzzle together the situation like he was known for.
Which meant that Tommy had no guidance.

"Dream, it's a moth.” Tommy repeats, staring up at the huge, brown-winged insect the size of a car.
"I know. Is- is this some kind of spider thing? Because please do not eat the mutated moth, I swear to god, Tommy." Dream hisses, actually sounding kind of worried.
"She's beautiful." Tommy breathes, watching the giant moth flap around, casually ripping the leaves of a tree with a powerful flap of its wings. "I'm gonna name her Clementine."
There's a moment of silence where Dream stares at him, follows Tommy's gaze to Clementine, who is perched delicately on a lamppost in awe of its light, and swears.
"Tommy, we are not keeping and naming a giant moth as a pet. Tommy, look at me-"
They keep her.
