On the whole, Holmes was utterly capable of holding his own in a fight. He had held this profession, with all of its danger, for decades now, and he was not often caught off guard.
However, when he rounded the corner into an alley while following footmarks, the sudden impact of a shovel against the side of his head rendered him somewhat less than able to defend himself.

Summary
Sid hears it happen before he sees it.
He and Father Brown are standing outside St. Mary’s, discussing the state of the roof.
“Do you think you can fix it, Sid? Even something temporary is better than nothing.” Father Brown asks. The roof is in a perpetual state of disrepair, has been even since Sid was little, but the parish has lacked the funds to do anything major, despite the constant fundraising attempts. Bake sale after bake sale, and the parish still hasn’t procured the money to manage it.
Inspector Sullivan saves a girl, though it's not without cost to himself. Sid panics, Father Brown helps and Sergeant Goodfellow is, as ever, an angel. Title is, once again, from a Hozier song.
