Ilya crumpled against Shane. Outside, the lake was black glass. A bat cut across the moon again, quick and gone.
“She would like this place,” Ilya murmured softly, sniffling and failing to smile. “Quiet. No shouting. No boots.” His voice dropped. “She would love you.”
Shane pressed his mouth to Ilya’s hair, careful, reverent. “You are so beautiful, Ilya. So perfect. Your mother was right. I know she loved you so much because I can see her in you.” Ilya whimpered softly, eyes closing and lashes fluttering against his cheeks.
(They make it to the cottage but Ilya's got a lot of unresolved trauma and wakes Shane up in the throes of a nightmare. In the quiet of their cottage they work through some of it).
Added an epilogue:
“You’re my good boy, aren’t you, Ilya?” Shane’s voice was soft and deep. He loved watching how Ilya reacted-biting his own lip and closing his eyes, a tear spilling down as his thrusts became erratic. Ilya was a really emotional person and, deep down, wanted to be told he was good, even if he would deny himself it.
“Please, please, please l-let me.” Ilya mumbled out, words heavily accented and wet as he gasped for air.

They sat in silence for a few seconds and watched the surf rolling in and out, in and out. Shane eased one knee up, resting his arm across it, watching Ilya out of the corner of his eye with infinite patience.
“You wanna talk about it?” he asked, voice soft enough that the wind almost stole it.
He did want to talk. His chest was full of words. Too full. But the idea of opening all that up? Of watching Shane recoil, or worse, watching him care? It was unbearable. The thought of being comforted by Shane, of feeling that warmth and knowing he couldn’t keep it, nearly crushed him.
Ilya kept his eyes on the water, jaw tight.
Shane reached out slowly and carefully and let the tip of one finger trace the outside of Ilya’s forearm. Just a whisper of contact. A question, not a demand.
Ilya looked at him. Shane gave a small tilt of his hand, beckoning him closer.
“Come here.”

A deviation from the All-Star weekend in Tampa:
Instead of finding Shane on the bench, it’s Ilya alone with his ghosts and falling apart in ways he never lets anyone see.
Until Shane sits beside him.
The tide is ceaseless and the night is heavy. Canon diverges; feelings don't.

Shane dialed. It rang… and rang… and rang again. With each passing ring the pit gnawing its way through Shane's stomach was growing. Just as he felt like it was about to stop ringing and go to voicemail, it picked up. Shane breathed out a sigh of relief.
“Thank God, I was getting worried. Where are you?”
There was an unsettling beat of silence before someone answered, “Hollander?”
It was not Ilya’s voice. Shane’s stomach dropped. He did his best to keep his voice steady as he answered. “Yeah? Uh, who is this? Can you give Ilya back his phone please?”
Another beat of silence.
“Hollander… God, um, something’s happened-”
After the events of The Long Game, Shane and Ilya play their first All-Star Weekend. Things are going great, until they go truly and horribly sideways. Ilya is left hospitalized following an attack off the ice, and Shane is left to pick up the pieces and wonder why.

“Hey Eddie?” He hears Buck say from behind him, breaking Eddie out of his thoughts. He turns, and there, down on one knee in the middle of his dust caked attic, is Evan Buckley, with a ring.
“Yes. Yes absolutely.” Eddie gets out before he can even really think about all the logistics of what he is saying.
Buck’s face falters for a second, his questioning look from before turning to something more confused, before looking down at the ring. His face does something weird then, a look that Eddie can’t describe even after 7 years of knowing him.
“What?”
“Yes, I'll marry you.” Eddie says, nodding, a grin spreading on his face.

Buck freezes. He pants and catches Eddie’s eyes again from above. “Uh, excuse me?”
Eddie regrets ever opening his mouth. He runs a shaking hand through his already messed-up hair. “Just– you weren’t this hot before, and now you’re…” he trails off.
Buck sits up on the bench and turns around to face Eddie. “Hot?” he asks, filling in the gaps with a pointed look. A stupid smile grows on his face with that fuck-ass tilted eyebrow.
Eddie hates him.
OR: Eddie comes to the sudden realisation that Buck is stupidly hot, and it awakens a whole new side of him that Eddie never knew existed.

They've been here an hour, and already, people are unanimously shutting off the engines and knuckling down for a long haul.
“Any phone signal?” Ben asks beside him.
Kenji checks his phone to confirm what they both already know. “Nope.”

Ben and Kenji get stuck in a storm with their young twins and no cell service. As the stakes get more and more dire, they have to choose whether to play it safe, or risk it to get them and their kids to safety.
