When the front desk had triggered the lockdown and called to say Mecha Man was in the SDN lobby with the Astral Pulse in hand, turning himself in, this wasn’t exactly what she expected. Mecha Man was supposed to be menacing. He was supposed to be feared, intimidating, imposing, a force to be reckoned with both in and out of the suit. Someone you looked at and thought, damn. Now that’s a villain.
When Blazer got to the lobby, all she could think was, damn. That’s just a kid.
The same thought returned to her now, watching the shallow rise and fall of Robert’s chest as he slept in the too-big hospital bed. Around either wrist, thick restraints pinned his arms down to the metal frame of the cot. Under the blanket that was draped over his legs, she knew the same restraints were fixed at his ankles, too.
“Feels like overkill,” she muttered, shaking her head again. Chase huffed a laugh, hunching further in on himself.
“It’s not. Kid’s a scrappy motherfucker, always has been,” he said.

“Hello, Qingqiu-shidi,” Zhangmen-shixiong says warmly. He is always warm with Shen Qingqiu, polite and attentive. He’s the same with other people but less so, he thinks. Not quite as considerate and tender, not quite as interested and obliging. Shen Qingqiu has carefully considered the matter, and decided that the special attention pleases him. He is the sort of person who likes to be treated better than others, apparently. Well, who doesn’t? “Apologies, but this shixiong was hoping to have a little bit of Shidi’s time and attention, enough at least for a cup of tea?”
Shen Qingqiu pretends to mull the matter over; he doesn’t want to seem too eager.
“Fine,” he loftily decides, and makes room for Zhangmen-shixiong to enter. “If Shixiong insists.”

Summary

When you both go to retire to your room Kaoru pitches a fit about you hogging all of Hikaru's attention. With her on the couch, the two of you instead end up sprawled out near the window on the sitting room floor. Now that it's nighttime you've pulled the curtains aside and opened the room up to let in the night air. All you can perceive is the light of the moon and the smell of the mosquito coil strategically placed in proximity to the sliding door.
"Hey, Yoshiki." Hikaru's voice reaches you from half a yard away. You know you're facing each other, but without the light of your phones or anything you can't see him very well. "I'm really havin' a lot of fun. Ya havin' fun?"
"I'm miserable." You're having fun.
"Man..." He steamrolls right over your joke. "We should get an apartment or somethin'. Kaoru can come too."

He is in an orphanage and, he looks down at his hands with a familiar hollow ache in his chest, and he is a child.
He is dead, and he is in an orphanage, and he is a child.
Kabuto laughs and laughs and laughs.

Or, a deeply unstable Root graduate with no concept of selfhood and only the most tenuous grasp of what sanity might be supposed to look like in sterile lab conditions makes friends, does his best to figure out how independence is supposed to work, terrifies a lot of responsible adults (and less responsible "peers") who really just want to help, and fends off “I can fix him” attempts on all sides (reciprocating with an “I can make him worse” aoe aura). Depressing introspection and unfortunate perspective gaps are only to be expected. This is the best Kabuto's mental health has been ... ever, and the eighth panic attack Hizashi has had this week.

“Of course Shizun means it,” Luo Binghe says, and oh, the words come out a bit numbly. He only just manages to stop himself from saying the next part aloud: He’s just mistaken.
(Of course he knows, of course everyone knows—the distasteful thing at the heart of Luo Binghe, the rotten core of him. His Shizun’s capacity for loving mercy knows no bounds; that doesn’t mean he, too, doesn’t know.)

The question makes Yue Qi feel cold, even colder than he already is. He shivers. “How can you not know the Ling Xi caves, if you’re here with me?” he demands. A new thought hits him like a thunderclap right between the eyes. “Are you here to get me out?”
Yue Qingyuan is left injured and poisoned in a cave after a fight. His mind drifts.

Then he turns towards Lord Xu and he says, “I will buy him.”
