Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Summary
Vi went to Stillwater a month after presenting as an Omega. Generally, that's not great - it means her body has been completely focused on trying to survive for years and years, from fifteen to twenty-three because of prison, stress, and being both an Enforcer and a pit fighter.
But after everything, when Vi's moved in with Caitlyn, is safe and fed and no longer working, it all just hits. She gains a ton of weight, she starts having heats again, she starts dealing with all these foreign things - and she's not happy with it. She wants things to go back to normal, so she tries to force it through 'dieting.'
Luckily, even though he hates her (or does he?), Tobias Kiramman is a good doctor, Caitlyn is a wonderful girlfriend, and the staff adore Vi.
Even though she's struggling, Vi is very much so surrounded by people who love her and who are willing to explain such things, help her through, and in the end, that's what matters.

She turns back around and picks up Abby’s hands to try and rub warmth back into them. She very pointedly does not acknowledge the pang in her chest, and how much it feels like when she found her, starved and tied to a post. Then, Joel’s lessons on survival ring in her brain.
Warm the body first. Losing a finger or two ain’t nothing compared to dying. Okay? Dry heat until they are no longer in danger, and then move ‘em to a warm bath if ya have one on hand.
Abby isn’t going to get warm enough like this. Lying stiff on the ground, her eyes close as she loses consciousness again. Ellie presses her fingers to her pulse. It’s too slow. She’s still too cold.
There was, another bit of advice that Joel gave.
Now Ellie, sometimes you’re not gonna have enough blankets to get ‘em warm. Or maybe they don’t have much time. If that’s the case, body heat works well.
Ellie closes her eyes and swallows.
If she was going to go to all of this trouble to save Abby in the first place, she can’t just stop at the finish line.

From her spot on the sandy beach, Ellie can perfectly see the domed building at the edge of Catalina Island. It stands tall and proud with mountains in front and behind. It has white walls and distinct reddish rooftops, and flags surrounding the roof.
Maybe it's all in her head, but she thinks about how Avalon looks like a sanctuary. The scenery and architecture are so amazing that it looks straight out of a brochure. But that's exactly what makes her more skeptical.
She imagined the Fireflies to regroup in an abandoned, sketchy apartment — similar to Boston.
"Ellie." Her name echoes from Abby's chapped lips. Ellie cranes her head slightly, making eye-contact with the blonde girl. She hadn't realized how far Lev and Abby walked as she just stood here lost in thought.
"C'mon," Abby says, urging her to continue with a nod of her head. There's a knowing look on her face as she stares at her. One of understanding.
With one last longing glance in the distance, Ellie follows her and leaves their boat behind.

Ellie's head snaps up and over to where a girl's voice comes from, and she immediately regrets it when the world sways and her vision blurs.
"You're that girl from Jackson," the girl's bleary lips move, forming words that take Ellie a second to process. The name of Ellie's hometown back in Wyoming rings alarms in her head. How the fuck would anyone know that? She squints her eyes further, desperately trying to see who is chained up to the wall opposite from her. Is it one of Abby's friends? That's the only way someone would remember her.
When Ellie finally gets a good look at the girl's face, her heart pounds and her skin boils as white-hot rage floods through her body.
It's her.
"Abby." The name spills from Ellie's lips, sounding like a threat. She doesn't say her name with any ounce of uncertainty. She knows it's her. How could she ever forget that face? The face of Joel's killer that has haunted her nightmares for months.
