"What?" Adrian says after a tense moment.
"I can prove it to everyone," Grace says, his heart in his throat. "I'll - I'll make you and Rocky the most celebrated couple on Erid. I promise."
"Stupid human," Adrian hisses. "You would give up your chance for him just like that?"
"Yes," Grace says hoarsely.
"Anything for him."

“I haven’t really been to a wedding where I’ve, uh… let loose. But, hey,” Dennis shrugged, “maybe I’m doing it wrong.”
“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

Or, Dennis is anxiously headed home for a "wedding" in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the details of which are increasingly fuzzy. Robby's got a medical conference in Omaha that same weekend. So they carpool. Seventeen hours both ways in an enclosed space with no way out except a tuck and roll. This'll go great. -

Robby ran away. He ran away from Pittsburgh and all the messes he created there. He wasn't proud of it. He hated himself for it, but Nebraska was nice. He could breathe here. He could think clearly. Robby opened his own practice. A family doctor in a town of sub a thousand people. It was easy. He could do this work in his sleep. That's all he wanted. He could treat people here, and he could make a difference. He could do the right thing here. Right?
That quiet is shattered on an icy winter evening, when Robby meets Dennis.
Robby has known about the cult that moved into the old farm outside of town. He just didn't know he'd become so involved.

“Dr. Robby!” A nurse calls, jogging up to them. “We have results on that patient in 3.”
Robby takes the paper and Dennis swallows, shifting on his feet. He waits while Robby reads, and then goes still at the look on his mentor’s face.
“What is it?”
Robby hands him the paper silently.
Dennis reads it, rereads it, and then has to will himself not to drop it. The ground sways beneath his feet. "No fucking way."or, when Dennis and Robby unknowingly treat a patient carrying a strain of the plague, they have to be quarantined as the hospital goes into lockdown. But what are they going to do trapped alone for hours? And what happens when Dennis starts coughing?

He opens the door and slams it shut behind him, leaning against it with a huff.
It’s not long before the tears come. He slides down the door and onto the cold tiles beneath him, and stays there for a few minutes.

He grabs his phone from his pocket slowly, shakily. Takes off the case in careful, calculated movements.
The blade, unused for months, clatters into his hand and he flinches as he catches it.
He shouldn’t.

Summary
“Come here, kid.” One of Robby’s hands catches Dennis’s and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennis’s attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
“Nope, don’t look at that,” Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennis’s eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. “Look at me. Yep, good. I’m right here. You’re doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.”
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennis’s face. ”Robby—”
“I know. It’s just Dana and Perlah. We’re just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. You’re safe.” Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennis’s hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. “Okay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."

Summary
Robby kept the barrel trained on the center of the boy’s chest. He was acutely aware of how fast his own breath came, how it fogged between them in uneven bursts.
“You’re trespassing.”
“I know.”
Snow sifted down through a gap in the siding, dusting the boy’s shoulders. He didn’t brush it off.
“What are you doing in my barn?”
A beat. The boy swallowed.
“My name’s Dennis,” he said, as though offering it might buy him something. “Storm caught me out there. I saw this and I– I didn't know anyone lived here.”
Robby’s finger pressed just enough to feel resistance.Dennis’s eyes flicked to the gun, then back to Robby’s face. There was no defiance there. No calculation. Just fear–raw and immediate.
tldr; robby is a retired writer dealing with the death of his estranged mother and the “house” she left him. dennis is a self proclaimed runaway taking shelter in robbys barn when he gets caught. robby agrees to let dennis stay during the storm. -

Summary
Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.

Really, Robby doesn’t know what possessed him to be so compliant. If any other resident had asked him something as insane as this, he would’ve said ‘No’ and kept it moving. But this was Dennis, and the first year had some strange sway over him – much to his dismay. Maybe it was the sad look in Dennis’s eyes, or his own incredible lack of self preservation when it came to this kid, but there had been something in the air, he supposed, that compelled him to offer himself up as tribute.

Dennis gets saved by a bearded man who would have been his attending in another life, so now he has to navigate this new world filled with zombies for the first time. And try his best not to fall too hard for the straight doctor double his age…
