Summary
Zuko had been to hell and back.
He had tearfully met the unrelentingly cruel gaze of his father at thirteen, and slowly nursed himself back to life. He had scoured the earth for whispers of an almost-forgotten legend for years, never knowing if he could find home again. He had screamed his throat raw at the gods and the spirits with only the rumbling of thunder in response. He had been struck at with lightning from both remaining family members.
Yet he had never faced anything so perilous as this.
The nasty voice that dictated his life for years on end, the one that whispered in his ear about his incompetence and foolishness, resurfaced in a way that it had not in years.
He dimly noted that every muscle in Sokka’s body was tense.
It was just the two of them in the royal courtyard, and the awkward distance between them seemed all at once too large and too easy to cross.
“Zuko?”
The fire lord swallowed.

Summary
In which Sokka has daddy issues, goes to college, experiences life-threatening danger, and gets therapy. In that order.
Routine is easy to find, but it makes Sokka uneasy. He wakes up, goes to class, hangs out with Teo and Haru, hangs out with Suki, works, and doesn’t talk to his family. He misses the kids, but every time he sees them, he sees Hakoda and Bato, and he does not want to have a conversation with them.
Sokka learns how to make all four of his newfound friends laugh. It’s his favorite way to know someone. Teo and Haru love making fun of the Mechanist, politics, and they have a wealth of inside jokes Sokka is only half-privy to. Suki, quite frankly, loves watching Sokka make an idiot of himself. Zuko is the hardest person to make laugh, with a penchant for dry humor, but every huff and chuckle feels like a massive victory. It makes Sokka feel useful.

Sokka isn’t stupid. Not that his sister is, mind you (at least, he’d never call her that to her face now that she’s honed her waterbending), or any of the rest of Team Avatar, although sometimes it feels like he’s living in a different world from the rest of them — a world where running out of food means starving, and walking into a town full of firebenders with the Avatar in tow will get you killed, rather than help you free a beaten-down Earthbender colony.
Anyways.
Sokka isn’t stupid, which is why he laughs directly in Aunt Wu’s face when she tells him that he will marry the Fire Lord.

Wednesdays are laundry day at the air temple, if only Zuko remembered that. Maybe if he had remembered, Sokka wouldn't have found himself in Zuko's room, trying to find his laundry. Maybe Sokka wouldn't have found a very uncomfortable surprise in the fire bender's bag instead. Maybe Sokka wouldn't have spent way too much time imagining Zuko in compromising positions in said uncomfortable surprise.

As Sozin's comet arrives, Zuko wakes to find a strange tattoo on his arm. Stranger still is the matching one Sokka has, which both keep ticking towards some inevitably event. Unable to explain it, they march on to face Ozai, knowing only one thing -- no matter what, Zuko and Sokka will stay together. No matter what happens, they'll be at one another's side.
Only, it doesn't work. They fail, they fall, and just when things seem at their lowest, they end up living through it again and again, until they can figure out what they're meant to do to make it to tomorrow.
