Yesterday he was at the airport, ready and on his way home after a winning game. He felt rather lethargic, sure, but he chalked it up to not sleeping well the night prior. Looking back though, it should've been obvious. His lack of hunger, a low-grade fever, and the near constant churning in his stomach were definite red flags.
This wasn’t just his usual anxieties about flying. He knew deep down that he was coming down with something. He had just hoped that it wouldn’t present itself so early—that it could’ve waited at least one more day.

“Is it worse than this mornin’?”
“A bit,” Ellie says uncomfortably.
“What is it, still like a cramp?” Joel says carefully.
“No, just…kinda like an ache, I guess? Around here.” Ellie runs her fingertip around her belly button.
His own stomach throbs again and Joel can't tell if it’s the pain that’s been bothering him since he woke up or dread jabbing at him, sharpening like a knife pressed against his gut, telling him that something might be wrong with Ellie.
Or: The one where Joel and Ellie have their own separate surgery-requiring medical emergencies within days of each other.

"…don't you think, Alhaitham?"
He could have strangled the Amurta sage for calling attention to him so directly. Instead, he frowned slightly and made a non-committal noise as he tried to figure out what, exactly, he thought about the statement that had been made. The sage in question had made a few good points earlier, but Alhaitham wasn't certain that the most recent bit had been an extension of those.
Calling back to them might be risky if the conversation had moved too far beyond it. And yet…
A scoff from one of the others. "The Scribe believes himself too far above the rest of us mere mortals to bother offering an opinion."
"The scribe," Alhaitham corrected, "is meant to be a neutral presence, recording and not interfering."
