Taking Armand’s hand, Daniel leads him back toward the villa. “That’s why we’re not splitting them up. Not at any stage, not for any reason.”
Swallowing hard, Armand turns Daniel’s words over in his mind. “I suppose they’ve already taken far greater risks for each other. With each other.”
“Yep,” Daniel agrees, squeezing Armand’s hand. “And do you know what we have in common, everyone in this fucked-up, but familial coven?”
“More things than most of us would care to admit,” Armand mutters, “but humor me. I’d love to hear your take, because it’s undoubtedly unique.”
“None of us are happy unless we’re constantly risking our necks for the idiot we’ve decided, for whatever irrational reason, is our idiot,” Daniel says.

Rashid snorts in wry amusement, laying a hand on Sam’s ankle since that’s all of him he can currently reach. “Can’t escape Paris tonight, can you?”
“Shut us down for a month,” Sam says. “No going out meant no hunts, no hunts meant no sacrifices, no sacrifices meant no performances.”
“No hunts and no performances meant none of you ate for a month,” Ricky guesses. “He inflicted his disordered eating on all of you, huh.”
“Oh, no, we ate,” Sam says, grimacing at each fledgling in turn. “There were rats everywhere, remember? Our punishment was cleaning them up.”
Paige covers her mouth with both hands and starts to laugh hysterically. “Oh, nooo,” she wheezes. “Hah, wow. Holy fuck. That’s so petty.”
“How about you try living on rats for a month and get back to me,” Sam says thinly, patting Paige’s arm. “Let’s see if you’re still giggling then.”

“You know that we’ve been listening to what goes on in every room of this penthouse,” Rashid says quietly, finally speaking to Daniel again. “It’s not the…sensitive content of a little while ago that I’m here to discuss. It’s something you said to Armand beforehand.”
“That’s reasonable of you,” Daniel says, swallowing hard. He’s not sure how to feel about the Talamasca having listened in real time as he literally fucked one of these vampires. Not only does everyone here suck, but they’re all depraved, too. “What did I say to him?”
Rashid puts on that attitude of weary disdain that’s more amusing than it should be. “You told him that in an ideal world you’d need to speak to the other surviving eyewitness of the events leading up to the fire. If you were offered the chance to do so, would you take it?”
Daniel feels that uncanny slippage again, but he thinks he gets it this time. His heart stutters in his chest with awed, terrible understanding. Wait a second, how does the full line go? Ticking, ticking, ticking—with the precision of a clock in a room as vast as the universe.
“No way,” Daniel says in disbelief. “No fucking way.”

“Ah,” Rashid says, catching his mistake. He sets the bottle down, and then offers his arm. “This is something you’ll have to cover anyway, right?”
Sam stares at Rashid’s wrist, his eyes owlishly inhuman again. “I’m,” he tries, licking his lips, both fangs exposed. “I’m sorry, but what are you…”
“I’m not stupid,” Rashid says. “If Armand’s companion is as much of a hothead as Raglan implies he is, then here’s a chance I’ll get bitten on the job. That’s likely what will have happened when a vacancy finally crops up, yeah? The turnover isn't too high, but when there is turnover…” He shrugs, lifting his wrist a fraction closer to Sam’s parted lips. “You can’t convince me you don’t have vampire agents bite human agents on the regular so they know what to expect. Tell me that, as my trainer, you wouldn’t be the one to do it. Tell me I’m wrong.”
Sam sucks in a shuddering breath, his hungry eyes fixed on Rashid’s. “Oh, darlin’. You’re not.”

Daniel inhales, instantly prepared to use words, words, words to help Rashid save face and also save his own ass because that’s his fucking forté. “My mistake. Your semi-estranged companion and extremely astute business partner used me as a glorified sex toy last night, and it turns out I hardcore needed to be objectified. I doubt this will come as a shock, but that worked wonders for my aging, ailing ego. I, uh…” He shoots a deferential sidelong glance at Rashid, who’s giving him a guarded look. “Wouldn’t mind if it happened again, but that’s at his discretion.”
Louis gives Rashid a look that sits somewhere at the crossroads of amusement, bafflement, and contempt. Razor-edged panic flares in Daniel’s stomach; he has no idea why such a specific cocktail of emotion should get to him when it’s aimed straight past him at someone else.
“Let me have this, Louis,” Rashid says with quiet urgency, his grasp on Daniel’s shoulder tightening. “He’ll be gone soon enough as it is.”
