Summary
After the events of Outward Passed Beyond, Torse and Maxwell meet after six months apart. But it's not what either of them were hoping for.
___Torse knows his escapement gives away his delight at seeing Maxwell, but he can’t be bother to care. He’s sure he looks ridiculous, smiling and venting steam, but seeing Maxwell’s face again after months is so relieving.
“Maxwell. You’re here!” Torse says.
“There you are… Welcome back, Torse.” Maxwell says so softly, just for him.
A trickle of blood runs from the corner of his mouth down his scruffy chin.
Torse’s heart trips and clicks against something lodged in his chest.

Maxwell experiences a perfectly justifiable level of mortal terror when he returns to find his friend missing, and overt declarations of lifelong devotion after 2 weeks of knowing each other is actually kind of a slow burn for Zood, okay?

“Why would she...? Oh.” Maxwell stiffens, then blows out a breath. He reaches past Torse’s mantle to clasp his neck, tucks them firmly together, and rhythmically brushes thumb across his vulnerable nape. “Oh, Torse.”His friend’s comfort breaks the dam. “What drove her to save me, when she was comfortable condemning so many to destruction? What had she found worthy of salvation within me that she deemed the rest of my homeworld to be lacking? Why am I not taken apart in the Amphereon, or walking as one of the Naughtomata, or lining the throat of that vile beast?”
Maxwell goes rigid.

Maxwell knew he shouldn’t take his focus off his own target, but his eyes instinctively sought Torse across the battlefield. They landed on him just in time to see a sword thrust perfectly through the iron ribs of his chest plate and heard the tip strike metal, the light leaving Torse in an instant as he fell inanimate with a loud clatter.

Kremy always just assumed the guy was tough. Sure Torbek had a soft heart, but he’d always taken whatever Kremy had thrown at him. He’d even fallen off the Herris Wheel for Baron’s sake! Multiple Times!
So was it really his fault he'd just assumed Torbek would be fine? Yes, yes, of course it was. Kremy had been stupid, not that the gatorfolk would ever admit it.-

Everyone was busy when the bugbear noticed that Frost was not having fun. While the rest of the party was chatting with the rock people, dancing and grabbing food and drink– Kremy discussing what to do with their time tomorrow– he had his eyes on the tabaxi. Not in a creepy way, of course (he’s not a pervert, he’s just a bugbear!), but he was worried about him. Torbek knew that the other often strayed away from the group, as if unsure how to place himself in the party, but this certainly felt different than most times. The tabaxi was… well, struggling, would be putting it lightly. And no one seemed to notice.

They’re quiet for a while. As quiet as Paulie can manage, at least, even though he is panting like a racehorse in reaction to being leaned over, intimidated, kept shadowed and sheltered; but Iceburg is breathing heavily through his nose, searching for some sort of answer in Paulie’s crossed arms and heaving chest and shaking, bent legs. Or looking for restraint.
“...Do you like this, Paulie?” Iceburg asks.
