Nero threw his head back and laughed, a full-belly laugh that broke through the quiet music drifting in the breeze. In spite of himself, Angelo couldn’t help the tension that eased just a little bit in his shoulders with Nero’s rambunctious laughter. The dark thoughts that had plagued him through the night, hanging over him like a heavy storm cloud, seemed to slip away from him like water off a duck’s back. In the soft moonlight with Nero, stupid, arrogant, naive Nero with his foolish smile and his unrestrained laughter the world felt lighter. Kinder. All of the sudden Angelo felt that he really could be a man named Avilio Bruno with no past and no future, standing upon a moonlit balcony with good alcohol and the groove of a jazz band to his back, with company by his side. For a moment, Angelo looked at Nero’s face and didn’t feel despair for the man he would have to destroy, but a foolish, kindling hope that perhaps, just maybe, he could remain by Nero’s side. It didn’t have to be forever. Even just this one moment would be enough.
