Summary
“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Dustin snarks. He rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of the passenger side of the bimmer, slamming the door behind him. He sticks his head through the passenger window, offering Steve a sarcastic sneer. “Have a good nap?”
Steve smacks his lips and swallows hard, but the odd metallic taste doesn’t leave his mouth. Dustin huffs at his lack of response and smacks the flat of his palm against the side of the car. Usually, Steve would reprimand him for that, tell the kid something about the paint job, or dents, but Dustin storms out of Steve’s sight before he can catch up to the situation. Steve’s slumped over the steering wheel, letting it press into the side of his face and his ribs, a radiating ache, but he knows the moment he moves, the pain will flare into something sharp and unbearable.
He has to bear it

The only people he ever saw were his parents, and they never spoke to him unless it was to scold him.
As more people come into Steve's life, he finds it hard to find the words he needs, and sometimes silence is all he can offer them.
When he gets close to Eddie Munson, an unlikely bond begins. Eddie is full of life and words, and Steve worries he won't be interesting enough to keep him around.
Little does Steve know, Eddie is perfectly fine with sitting in silence with him.

Summary
Steve snorts and shakes his head, but he does seem satisfied with Eddie’s assumption. Eddie doesn’t tell him all the other things that Steve’s choice revealed to him. That he’s a romantic at heart, longing for something, something to fill that emptiness in his heart.
It makes Eddie’s hands tingle with the desire to reach out. To soothe some of the ache.
Not that he has any illusion that he could.
Instead, he turns up the radio and watches the brown leaves pass them by, imagining Steve happy and full of sunshine in California. Wonders who would be by his side when he’s not lonely anymore.

And dessert was only a last year thing anyway. This record that he has, though, he had been set on not breaking. Prove some point. Take a photo for the scrapbook and gift it straight to his dad’s stupid office, maybe send a hard boiled egg, tell him to suck it.
Like he’d waste his precious minimum wage salary on something like that.
