Tommy had stormed away before they could continue to yell. Before they continued to fight. Before they continued to verbally tear each other apart the way they never did when they were kids.
But that was a long time ago.
Before Tommy became a burden. A strain on Wilbur’s life, health, finances.
(Because Wilbur did have a choice, really. He didn’t have to take Tommy in. Which means he still has a choice now—at any moment, he could decide to drop Tommy off into a system. It terrifies him. Like booming thunder and threats of a house fire, it terrifies him).
So when Tommy woke up the next day, head aching and nose running, he swore he wouldn’t let Wilbur know.

After an argument, Tommy decides to hide a sickness from Wilbur. Which means that when he passes out in the middle of a rainstorm, Techno is the one that has to take him home--but Tommy is incoherent, except for his insistence that he has been abandoned. It's up to Techno to decide if Tommy should make it home.

“And why do you have to pretend?” Techno asks, his fingers lightly brushing over his secondaries.
“Because,” Tommy grumbles, sitting up, eyeing Techno carefully, “Appearances and shit, I dunno, Wilbur’s reasons are stupid.” He says, watching as Techno starts to try and preen his feathers.
His instincts rear up in the back of his head, and he pulls his wing away jerkily, moving to a crouching position. Techno lets his wing go without a fight, watching as the golden feathers disappear from his hands.
Or Tommy ends up befriending Techno, a dangerous god, just to spite Wilbur.

Techno hums, his hands slowly unwrapping from around his neck, though one lingers. He pushes his chin up with one hand, trialing a finger down his neck with the other. Tommy shivers at the touch, being reminded that the guy in front of him is a fucking vampire.
“Who, little witch?” He croons, goosebumps running up along his arms as Techno stops at his pulse point, no doubt feeling how fast his heart was beating.
Or Tommy is a lonely witch that falls right into the hands of three waiting vampires.

The scream rang like metal through the empty streets, followed rapidly by the sound of rubber soles slapping against the pavement.
Technoblade’s axe was in his hand before he really registered it. Chat leapt ahead of him, reaching through the shadows to surround the kid on a dead sprint towards him.
The kid only nearly managed to avoid slamming into Technoblade with the full force of his sprint. He was panting as he skidded to a stop, his pale cheeks flushed as he stared up at Technoblade.
“You’re the Blade.”
Technoblade ignored his stunned declaration. He caught the kid by the shoulder, yanking him behind him and shielding him with his body. “What is it?” he demanded, peering into the darkness. “What’s wrong?”
The kid shrugged off his grip.
“Oh, it’s fine,” he said nonchalantly, as if his voice wasn’t still hoarse from screaming bloody murder. “There’s no one there.”
Technoblade blinked. Every hair still stood on end until he took in the boy’s words. “What?”
“There's no one there,” the kid repeated impatiently. “I just needed your attention.”
Or, three times Tommy cries wolf, and one time he means it.

“Who let you two in?” The general breaths, his voice hardly above a whisper. He reaches forward, his hands shaking just slightly and far away enough that it seems like he’s not sure what to do with them. Wilbur’s heart beats a mile a minute in his chest and panic claws at his throat, closing it up and making it hard to breathe.
“I enlisted, sir.” Wilbur mumbles, barely loud enough to hear but the general flinches back as if Wilbur had shouted at him.
“You enlisted?” He parrots, confusion lacing his tone. “And they allowed you in?”
or
Wilbur enlists in the army as a last resort for him and his little brother and finds out very quickly how bad of an idea that was, especially when Tommy decides that leaving Wilbur and wondering around a military camp is an excellent use of his time.

“Well, isn’t this a surprise?” A voice rang over a speaker system. Tommy’s stomach jumped into his throat. It came from every side, impossible to tell where he actually was.
It was all a trap.
How did no one see this coming? A peace banquet between the villains, vigilantes, and heroes? That was sketchy for any side, how did he not think that the very person who could overpower anyone in the room would set something like this up?
A spotlight clicked on in the center of the room. A man in a brown trench coat slipped into the center light, grinning from ear to ear as his eyes were shadowed by his hair and mask, making it seem like there was no top to his face at all, just the smile.
“It’s lovely to see all of you,” Charm grinned impossibly wide. “Thank you for coming. As you may have guessed, I am your host.”or
Vigilante Tommy is invited to a banquet between the heroes, villains, and vigilantes, finds out everything is a trap, and now has to team up with a villain he despises just for a chance to live.

Tommy’s not low enough in this messed up world to sell out people like that. Family like that. He hasn’t had any family or friends in a long, long time. Dream might think that to Tommy it’s all an act, or that he doesn’t have enough compassion to care, or that he’s more scared of pissing off Dream than them.
But he’s not scared of Dream. He does care about the Crafts more than any stupid debts to pay. His life ended a long time ago, a revenant kept around for the masked man’s amusement.
He’s just happy he got to say goodbye to them.

or, Tommy makes the mistake of getting emotionally attached to the family he's spying on. He's lucky they've grown attached to him, too.
