Mike Wheeler was a lot of things: stubborn to a fault and to his parents' dismay, clumsy as hell—curse his lanky body with its long limbs and bony, sharp edges—and socially awkward in ways that made "understatement" feel generous. Sometimes his brain was just so jumbled, his thoughts moving faster than his mouth could keep up, which led to him ranting and raving about whatever latest topic had piqued his interest, long past the point of anyone in the Party truly listening.
But he was also endlessly inquisitive. He always had been, ever since he was a child tugging on his mother's blouse with tiny hands sticky from maple syrup, asking questions about his parents' already crumbling marriage—questions he was far too young to understand at the time.
And he was fiercely loyal. He had sworn his oath to the Party long ago: to serve, to protect, to lead, to be The Heart, no matter what. Just as a good Paladin should.
But most of all? He was an idiot. A frankly oblivious, dense, dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks IDIOT. Because for all his book-smarts and nerdiness and his constant curiosity, his hunger for knowledge, he may as well have had the emotional self-insight of a stale, moldy piece of bread.

It started three weeks ago, almost four. Will had woken from some sort of nightmare and, instead of seeking comfort in Mike the way he usually would, he’d rolled out a sleeping bag from the closet and chosen to sleep on the floor.
No one believes Mike, except for Joyce. But even she doesn’t understand the full extent to which something is wrong with Will.
Mike understands, though. Mike has been paying attention.

18 months after the events of seasons 4 stranger things. The group is doing crawls, in hopes of finding vecna. A bunch of things goes wrong, I mean, what wouldn't go wrong? Will's been acting..strange. more distant from Mike, Mike hates this. He doesn't know WHY Will is acting this way or what would make him act this way. Is it vecna? The upside down? Or, something deeper than that, more emotional, more..serious. More personal. Whatever it is, Mike wants to know why and wants to make it stop while also focusing on his failing relationship with eleven. Meanwhile, eleven is focused on her training. Dustin is busy grieving Eddie, Max is in a coma. Still. And Will himself is dealing with everything all at once. From an overbearing and protective mother to his feelings and emotions towards Mike. And, someone else?

Mike never liked the rain.
Whenever it came, disaster was bound to strike in a neverending streamline of shitty situations Mike was all too familiar with.
The gentle pitter patters against his bedroom window was a cruel contrast to the screaming matches downstairs—his parents’ voices cutting through the silence of their perfect home like knives. He could always hear Hollie’s soft, stifled sobs down the hall, and the quiet fury Nancy buried deep within the four walls of her room. That was the first time when the rain decided to greet him and his family a warm hello, and then it just kept coming, day after day after that.
It was suffocating.

TLDR; Mike confronts his fears that come with adulthood, breaks himself down, and finds the strength to make himself whole again (with a little bit of Will's help of course).

It’s too late. Mike grabs Will’s wrist and heat floods Will’s body. In the absence of his own magic, the sensation of someone else’s across his skin is a shock, but the fact that it’s Mike doesn’t exactly help matters. Everyone’s magic feels different. Jonathan’s Bless is a splash of water on the back of the neck. Robin’s Fly has the zing of biting into a lemon. Dustin’s Bardics are the twinge of laughing so hard your stomach hurts.
But Mike’s Lay On Hands just feels warm. Like the sun just before it sets, casting the world in golden light; like the glow of torchlight, or a campfire, heat without danger.

“Jeez, you really are sick.” Will muttered and Mike choked out a laugh.
“‘S just my luck.” He murmured, ignoring the way his head spun when he lifted it from the toilet seat.
Even under the harsh white light of the bathroom, Will still looked good, his honey brown eyes furrowed in concern and lips slightly parted. He was beautiful, and Mike wanted to bite him.
He recoiled a bit at the thought but now that he had thought it, it wouldn't go away. He could imagine it, digging his teeth into Will’s wrist, blood beading from the teeth marks faster than he could lick it up. The rushing in his ears got louder, twin heartbeats thudding in his ears and Mike turned to heave into the toilet again, not even bothering to stop the sobs that were ripping through him.

For a second their eyes met, but Mike quickly glanced away. He’d been doing that more often recently. Will could understand. Holding eye contact lately… ever since they were spending nights lying awake next to each other, sometimes talking, but mostly pretending to sleep… Let’s say it felt harder than usual to hold Mike’s gaze for him as well.
“… Yes,” Mike answered. “Right. She said that,” he added as if to remind himself.
A loud snort from the main hall pierced through their conversation. “Oh, please.” Murray mocked from the couch. Will and Mike both turned their heads to stare at him with pinched expressions.
“What?” Murray exclaimed. “Falling out of love is not the reason El broke up with you.”OR: Mike and Will get Murray’d and deal with the consequences.

“We have to kill him,” Mike finishes fiercely, and for a second, Will pictures him in full paladin gear, making the same speech in a castle, or a magical forest, or a dark dungeon. He’s every bit the boy Will’s always known, the one who stands up for his friends and his principles and never, ever backs down. Even when the odds are against them. Even when they’re impossible.
Will swears that he can feel electricity crackling in the air, Mike’s last sentence settling on the group like a physical weight. Everyone looks impressed: Jonathan, Hopper, even Owens. Will knows the look on his own face must be incredibly obvious, incredibly stupid.
He doesn’t care. That’s the Mike he knows. That’s the Party’s leader.
That’s the boy Will fell in love with.

There is a slight edge to her voice that has Will quickly meeting her gaze. Her lips are quirked up at the corners, and her eyebrow is cocked knowingly. It takes Will a minute to process what she’s insinuating, because the idea seems so ridiculous. But when realization sets in, his eyes widen, and it takes everything in him not to burst into laughter.
“Oh god, Mom, no,” he says, shaking his head frantically. “We’re not… No. Just no. It’s not like that. We’re just friends.”
What if he just told her?
Would it be the end of the world?
No, the end of the world is already happening, and it has nothing to do with his sexuality.
