Summary
He throws the car in park and removes the key before leaning forward slightly to rest his forehead on the steering wheel. The car shakes as the kids scramble out of it, slamming the doors closed behind them. Each resulting WHAM sets off fireworks behind Steve’s closed eyelids.
He just needs a minute. One minute of silence. Then, he’ll go inside to wrangle the kids and clean up before Mrs. Byers gets back.
A hand lands on his shoulder and he jumps, whipping his head to see who’s touching him. Pain floods over the left side of his head and down through his neck and shoulders. He presses a hand into his left eyebrow, trying to chase the pain away with the pressure.
Dustin still sits in the passenger seat next to him. His hand tightens on his shoulder, eyes blown wide.
“Steve, hey, you okay?”

Although Phil didn’t want to take his eyes off of the two people in front of him, he shouted back to the kidnapped person, “Hey mate, do you know why these dumbasses kidnapped you?”
There was a heavy pause before a hoarse voice asked, “Wait, are you talking to me?”
Phil briefly glanced over his shoulder at the figure. He was hanging upside down, his hands tied behind his back and feet bound with chains.
“Yes, I’m talking to you, the guy hanging from the fucking ceiling. Why did these guys kidnap you?”
“I don’t know! I’ve never seen them before in my life!” The guy cried out. “Please get me out of here I’ve been tied up for-”
“Don’t worry. I’m gonna get you out,” Phil said, earning himself a sharp look from the person he was still pointing his sword at. “Consider it payment for breaking my window.”

Philza seemed taller in real life. Still blond like Chayanne, scraped-up and wiry with bedraggled wings he held close to his back– dressed like he had been on the island, in the green robes he’d been dropped off in, except now he had scraps of a Federation uniform on, too, and a gas mask slung over his shoulder with a long beak like a bird’s, not the kind Chayanne grew up with for emergencies. Tired eyes, with crow’s feet that tightened when he caught sight of Chayanne in the cell.
Hi, Dad. The words scurried like rats trying to escape a sinking ship, hitting doors they couldn’t squeeze under. He hadn’t had an easy time talking with his voice since he’d come out of the tank, and right now he didn’t even have his pad to scribble on.
Chayanne dipped his head a tiny bit so he seemed polite without compromising his line of sight. He dropped his metal bar with a clang and raised his hands.

They all agreed, every kid in class. No drawings unless they had to for school. And in that case, only happy things: rainbows, puppies. Maybe Chayanne beating up Mr. Quackity, if they thought they could get away with it.

Richarlyson was in a small cell with Ramon and Dapper, he looked unharmed if tired. Pepito was in another, curled against the wall.
And then Leo, his perfect daughter, slumped against him.
“Leo!” He yelled, voice joining the cries of the others.
As if hearing only his voice, Leo’s eyes darted up from the ground towards him. They widened.

Nope, no, fuck his lack of brain to mouth filter. Rule one of talking to people who are trying to kill you: don’t antagonise them into throwing more daggers at your head. Actually, rule one was probably “don’t talk to them at all”, but he’d definitely messed that one up too.
Or: Missa is a bard who also happens to be the runaway prince of a recently-invaded island nation. Philza is a bounty hunter who’s particularly interested in Missa- or rather, the impressive bounty on his head. They should be enemies, right?
