“It’s not a well ordered society.” Gideon knew where that was going, and she certainly didn’t have the time. She slapped a slip of paper onto the counter and said, “It’s secret santa.”
And there lay the source of all of her problems: handwritten in a script so neat and precise it could have been printed, Harrowhark Nonagesimus. And everyone knew that Gideon and Harrow hated each other.
So what if they had started taking smoke breaks together? So what if Harrow had helped her fold shirts just last week, in a store she didn’t even work in? So what if Harrow had laughed as the two of them did Jagerbombs at Palamedes’ Halloween party, the glint of her fake fangs flashing invitingly in the orange party lights? They hated each other. The two of them would both work in the mall until one of them inevitably strangled the other with her bare hands, and Gideon wouldn’t have it any other way.
Except that lately, Gideon had started to like Harrow.
Which made that slip of paper a fucking problem.

Harrow’s face stiffens at the mention of hiding, and Gideon searches for the unexplainable look buried beneath the usual hostility. That was a mistake on Gideon’s part, because her memories remind her that the last time Gideon saw her, Harrow had sported this same exact look. Her haunted eyes kept Gideon up at nights wondering what it could have possibly meant.

“Fuuuuck, just throw me out the fucking window.” She whined pitifully to the empty room.
“And why would I do that, Griddle?” a disembodied voice questioned her.

Harrow clicked her tongue. Being fooled by a forged ID was one thing. Being fooled by one held by this idiot was inconceivable. “Show it to me again.” Harrow held out her palm.

Gideon would have held her breath and paused if by some miracle she managed to scrape together a do-over. Harrow probably would have, too, just to avoid having to say anything. Lapsed into a comfortable silence again with their fingers entwined the two of them could sit and stare and wait and wait and wait, witness their entire lives stretched elastic before them: St. Samael’s and the horror of the last week-and-a-half fading distantly into the horizon behind.
The stars currently floating above the elevator shaft were bright white and so sugary sweet they hurt Gideon’s teeth. No Southern Cross though— which sucked balls. She couldn’t really turn, either, to see if even a glimpse of it was visible from her second- (more likely third-) to-last resting place.
Okay, fine, pedantics: the place where Gideon Nav was most definitely going to die.

It couldn't be; Gideon was wide the fuck awake and nightmares can't happen when you're on your feet, right? She couldn't have heard her childhood nemesis, the vindictive little troll who’d inflicted so much cruelty on a younger, less wary Gideon- she'd imagined it. Had to have imagined it.
“Nav,” Cam said, voice lower now that the band- Gideon didn't remember the name so she referred to them internally as The Mopey McGee’s- had finally packed it in. The crowd’s noise rose to a dull roar around them, and Gideon hoped that her auditory hallucinations had come to an end.
