Ed turned his eyes up at the gray, darkening sky. Then he looked to the sea, looming at the bottom of the steep mountain side and stretching endlessly beyond the horizon.

Wee John scoffs. “Of course he does voices. He’s our captain.”
Well. Stede can hardly disappoint, then. He clears his throat and thinks of Ed’s voice: its lower pitch, roughened with a hint of rasp, the heavier tongue that drags his vowels and thickens his consonants. “The Gentleman Pirate, I presume.”
In which Stede accidentally convinces the pirating world that Gentlebeard (or Blackbonnet or Stedward; there's a poll) is canon, reunites his crew, and gets his boyfriend back.

Summary
Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?
This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.

“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.
Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.
“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?

Ed, strapping and successful lawyer, needs the sweet surrender of letting go every once in a while. His life was wrought with work and no play, which made Ed a very hollow man to be around.
Along came Stede - junior sex worker at Jackie's - a bar Ed hadn't been to in years. One night, fate pulled him through those doors and into Stede's lap. And in Stede's lap, Ed was able to surrender. And that would be that - a simple business transaction. Stede provides a service and Ed is a paying customer. End of story, roll credits, everyone goes home.

It’s not just tobacco, or candy sugar, or shampoo. Something ties it all together. He’s missing an aftershave, a conditioner, an oil. The smell of something from his skin. A washing detergent that he can bottle up and take out whenever he starts spiralling again, hold it, and think: that’s all it was.
