Summary
Harry Potter is twice-orphaned by the time he's nine years old. When his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon die in a car crash before his ninth birthday, he's sent with his cousin Dudley to live with Aunt Marge. Unfortunately, Aunt Marge drops him off at what she thinks is an orphanage, leaving Harry in the care of children's services.
A year later, Remus Lupin comes looking for his best friend's son, to check on his welfare. When he finds Harry missing, he asks for his father's help in getting Harry to safety and family. As Remus, Lyall, and Harry navigate their new family dynamics, they are challenged by all parts of the wizarding world, and by the mysterious events that follow with Harry's years at Hogwarts. Chapters will alternate between Harry POV and Remus POV, unless otherwise stated. Canon-compliant relationships.
Part 1: Covers 1990-1994, including the year before Harry's first year at Hogwarts through the end of canon's Prisoner of Azkaban. COMPLETE.

There he meets the very people who will set up the rest of his life, and is forced to confront the pieces of himself he'd long thought had been lost.

He listens to Dumbledore explain all the things he wishes he knew before, sits in King's Cross, and wonders if he really has to go back. Harry's very, very tired, and he wishes it wasn't so simple: die and move on or go back to a world that you don't know how to survive. Killing Voldemort is swell and all, but he's not much looking forward to everything after that. To grieving, growing, loving, living.
Considering the ticket in his hands, Harry decides that he's tired of going along with decisions other people make for him. This is his party, his train station, his choice. Why not make it a happier one? One that makes everything so far worth living through. He rubs at the ticket and watches it change with satisfaction. Hogwarts to Godric's Hollow, October 31st, 1981. King's Cross Station, one-way ticket.
And because he's Harry Potter, he does the unthinkable. He gives the ticket to his godfather.

The voice is quiet, barely audible over the shriek of another inmate begging for the patronus to come nearer to them and give them the same respite from the Dementor's horrors, but Sirius hears it. He knows it. The rough accent, cracked and broken resonates deeper inside of him than his own voice would. His head snapped toward her. And then he ran.
Tonks barely had a moment to register the movement before she was scooped into his arms, held tight against his chest. His lips pressed against her hair, fierce and desperate. For a moment, he just held her, grounding himself in the proof that she was still here, still breathing. Then, with a sharp inhale, he pulled back, his hands running over her arms, her waist, her face searching for the damage."You're hurt, Dora," he whispered, his voice breaking at the sight of her.
"Mm," she mumbled, barely coherent. "Not now... need to hide."
His grip tightened. "Can you walk, love?"
