Summary
Tim was out on the roof of some old apartment building. He had his camera in hand and the pair of vigilantes to photograph. He had become an export in tracking and hiding from the bats in his many years of watching them (stocking them). It was his thing. He could get around them without being noticed. It was his great talent. He was always good at going unnoticed. His parents even praised him for it once. He was a ghost, A silent shadow in a cold and empty house.
Tim saw them, Batman and Robin, with Nightwing and Red Hood following close behind. He lifted his camera and began taking pictures of them soaring through the air.
This was one of the only sources of joy in Tim’s life. Every morning Tim would wake up too early in an empty house, go to work as the CEO of Drake Industries, and then go back to the empty house after work, go to bed late working more for DI (Drake Industries). So Tim’s sleep schedule was basically nonexistent at this point, and on the off chance he didn't have to work into the late hours of the night, he was most likely stalking the bats.

“What? All I’m saying is that all your parenting classes are paying off, you don’t even need to threaten to bench him and he already hates you.”
“Jason.”
“Relax,” Jason said. “He doesn’t hate you. It’s just weird, you know.”
Bruce stared at him.
Jason rolled his eyes, muttering something under his breath. He readjusted Tim a little, gently brushing away some dark hair from Tim’s face.
“There wasn’t exactly a shit tonne of baby assassins back in the League. In fact, there was only Damian. He’s not used to this kind of thing.”
“That’s no excuse for not sleeping through the night.”
“You’re acting like Damian’s the one who’s been magically puffed into a little kid. Well, littler than he is already. This is weird as hell, Bruce, all he knows about child rearing is how he himself was raised.”

Summary
For a long time, Tim doesn’t know his parents are dead. Maybe that makes him a bad son, for not knowing. When he reads about death, or when he watches people die in movies, their loved ones always know. There’s a gasp of pained revelation, an instinctual loss.
Tim doesn’t feel that. He wouldn’t have noticed at all, except for that he likes to keep track of the things going on in the places where his parents visit. Sometimes, it means he can ask leading questions, on their mostly-weekly phone calls, and Janet will spiral off into some tangent about these people and their lack of work ethic, and she’ll talk for minutes on end before realizing she’s still on the phone, getting bored, and then ending the call. So he keeps an alert system on his phone, for news, so they have some topics in common to talk about. It’s only luck he sees the article before anyone else does.

He tapped the screen again, his face up close in the zoomed camera.
"Whoa, ultra Tim-vision, no thank you. I think I just saw my pimple's pimple. Gross." He zoomed out and grinned at himself. "I don't know if I have ever felt so freaking happy or strong or cool, or well, anything, in my whole entire life."
And it was true. Standing atop a building as Robin. If someone were to look up, they would definitely think he was the real deal and the thought left him beaming. Jumping in place, Tim gave another whoop, punching the air and then bending over into a fit of high pitched laughter. This was all the joy he would ever need for the rest of his existence.
And then someone screamed.
OR,
Tim Drake puts together a very realistic Robin costume for Halloween and gets mistaken for the real deal.

Summary
Bruce wakes with a snort and a crick in his neck.
Wincing, he picks his twinging neck up slowly, blinking grit out of his eyes. The tv is still on, flickering in the otherwise dark room.
“Is it possible… that aliens are responsible for the tragic wreck of the Titanic?” a narrator is asking.
Tim is still dead weight across his legs. Bruce can feel a damp patch on his sweatpants where he’s drooled on him.
Bruce digs his phone out of his pocket, careful not to disturb him.
4:32am.
Fuck.
Tim was due to be woken up for a concussion check over three hours ago.
“Tim,” he murmurs, rough with sleep. “Wake up, bud.” He shakes him gently.
When he doesn’t stir, he shakes him again, harder, sighing softly - Tim always is dead to the world on the rare occasions he actually sleeps. “Tim,” he repeats, louder, a normal speaking volume.
He tugs on his shoulder, rolling him towards Bruce.
There’s no resistance.
Tim’s head lolls.

His father is on him in a second, pinning him back against the cabinets behind him with impressive speed for a man who was in a coma mere months ago. “They aren’t your family, I am,” he snarls in his face. “And someday you’re going to learn to respect that.”
Some frayed thread of self-control, worn thin by years of this bullshit, finally snaps. “I was always here, I was always ready for you to come home and act like family,” he spits back, heart pounding in his chest. “You were the ones who never wanted to be. Bruce Wayne has acted like more of a father to me than you ever have.”
Jack’s hands move from pinning his shoulders to wrapping around his throat in the space between heartbeats. Tim should be able to break the hold, easy. Should be able to push him away, strike his legs out from under him even without his bo staff to help him. He’s Robin.
Instead, cold ice spills through his veins, freezing him in place even as his windpipe buckles.

Batman is a myth. A legend. A mask without a man behind it. A symbol of hope. Bruce and his family are willing to do a lot to keep the symbol alive, including burning their civilian identities.
“If they come looking for Batman, they can’t be allowed to find him,” Bruce tells this to every new child he takes under his cape. “If they get too close, all they will find is a man who hurts his children.”
Dick hadn’t understood what that would mean.
