He watches without a word as Shane attempts to walk properly, fighting the wince in his face. He wants to ask if Shane thinks he’s that good of an actor, or if Ilya is that stupid he can’t pick up on a hidden injury.

The loop began again in his mind: the gym, the showers, Rozanov’s hands, Rozanov’s mouth, the moans and profanities and apologies that had slipped from Shane’s own throat in the heat of the moment. It was a swirling cocktail of fear, guilt, and a terrifying, lingering want. He couldn’t make it stop, no matter how hard he tried to choke it down.
His equilibrium snapped, sending his stomach into a free fall. The acidic burn rose in his throat, sharp and undeniable. Shane was stumbling toward the bathroom before his brain had even told his legs to move—his body reacting to an inevitability his mind was still resisting.

Shane is already an OCD, perfectionist, athlete, so it’s not a stretch to imagine he has a nervous stomach. These chapters eventually contrast his years of breaking down in private with the moment he finally lets Ilya in.

Summary
Ilya’s hand wraps around his bare wrist and squeezes. Shane barely stops himself from collapsing to his knees.
The pressure lights up every receptor of his touch-starved nervous system, wrenching a small, pained noise from the back of his throat. Every muted sensation comes flooding back so intensely that it almost hurts. He needs Ilya to hold him down until there’s nothing inside him but quiet. He wants to sink into him and disappear.
It takes Shane an entire beat to remember where they are. Fighting against the fog in his mind, he manages to drag his gaze up to meet Ilya’s.
There’s a slow-dawning horror and understanding on Ilya’s face.

“So... you’re a transfer student?” Jayce ventures, trying to fill the silence.
Viktor shakes his head. “Exchange student. From The Czech Republic. I was in a dorm, but the elevator is broken more than it works. Housing made arrangements.” He sets his suitcase down and adjusts his cane, his movements precise but clearly strained.
“Right,” Jayce says, feeling a flicker of guilt for his earlier irritation. “Well, uh, welcome, I guess. Your room’s down the hall on the left.”
Viktor doesn’t respond, already moving toward the hallway without waiting for further instructions. Jayce watches him disappear into the room, the door clicking shut behind him.
He flops back onto the couch, grabbing his phone to text Caitlyn again:
Jayce: He hates me already.
Caitlyn: Don’t so be dramatic. Give it time. Maybe bake him cookies or something.
Jayce: He doesn’t seem like a cookie guy. More like... brooding and vaguely annoyed at my existence.
Caitlyn: Perfect. You’re great at brooding and vaguely annoying. 😘

He was a blacksmith, an engineer. He spent his days working in front of a forge or sweating over a soldering iron. He was too accustomed to the roiling heat, he caught a cold the second snow started to fall. That became the diplomatic excuse, when he needed to quietly and politely bow out of whatever social or fundraising event the Kiramman's had arranged, or later down the line at the endless hand-greasing galas or dinners the Man of Progress had to attend that happened to be scheduled on the first snow of the season.
Jayce fucking hated snow.
