The round sun, shining brightly in the sky for more than 20 minutes per day. The smiles of strangers he passed in the street. The music he heard emanating from Garret's room late at night.
He was glad to hear it. It kept him grounded after the culture shock he felt. It was just so different.
A few weeks after the whole affair, he was perched on the edge of his bed, swaying slightly to the soft music that drifted through the walls from Garret's room to his.
He had found that the moment the clock turned 22:00, Garret's music transitioned from heavy metal to surprisingly heart-aching, emotional music.

But Todd barely heard him, his eyes closed tight, as he tried very hard to focus on breathing in and out. Even with the darkness of his eyelids, it still felt like each wall of the small closet was pushing harder and harder against him— closing in on every side. Every inch of Neil’s body that was pressed against him made him feel like he was burning alive. His tombstone would read, Todd Anderson, Cause of Death: Claustrophobia and Homosexual Thoughts. The thought made Todd want to laugh dryly but none of this was fucking funny so he instead cursed God for making his whole life one big joke.
“Todd,” Neil whispered, “Please don’t freak out.”

Summary
Thursday evenings were, unequivocally, Neil’s favorite part of the week.
On the surface, the explanation for this was simple enough. It was his opportunity to turn his focus entirely to the topic that made him happiest: Shakespeare. He savored the time he was able to spend sitting out on the dock, overlooking the lake, reading and reciting the words he loved so much.
The other reason —perhaps the more prominent one— Neil wasn’t able to explain quite as easily. In fact, he could hardly admit it to himself. Thursday evenings… they meant being alone with Todd.

“Heard there was a party going on in here,” Neil announces from the doorway. “Figured I’d make an appearance.”
If this were any other time Charlie would’ve laughed at the arrogance in his tone, but not now. Not with the blood trickling from a cut directly under a still-forming black eye; not with the split lip that has blood dripping down Neil’s chin. “What the hell?” Charlie yells as he hurries over to where his best friend has flopped onto the ratty common room couch.
Neil shoots him a genuine yet weak smile. “You should see the other guy,” he says weakly, exhaustion audible in his voice.
Or: Neil gets into a fist-fight over Todd and Charlie attempts to take the blame. Only someone else gets there first.
