“That wasn’t your choice to make,” MJ repeats, Peter nodding as he puts his hands up.
“I know. I know it wasn’t, I just–” he stops, considers something for a beat.
“I spent a lot of time hoping that you two were okay, missing you guys and if this is what it’s like now, awkward and weird, then I’ll deal with it. I’ll take it.”
He wrings his hands together, smiling softly at her. “It’s a lot better doing this than living without you.”

Something's wrong with Peter. He's been acting strange and Tony doesn't know how to help him.
One day, Peter came back to the Stark Tower banged up and bruised. As soon as he laid eyes on Tony and the Avengers in the meeting room, he lost it. Tony's been concerned since he's never acted like this before. He expected that the mission he sent Peter on would've been easy yet he came back hurt.
Tony tries to get Peter to tell him what happened but now he pretends that it never happened. He's back to his usual self yet.. something's not right.
He disappears randomly before reappearing out of nowhere with no memory of their earlier conversations and even though he smiles, it feels very forced and hurt.
The Avengers try to get to the bottom of it but it's impossible. They're about to give up until a second Peter walks into the same room.

“Peter,” she says, and everything stops. His heart, his brain, the world.
His breath is caught in his throat and he almost chokes on it. “Natasha. I swear to God, if you’re fucking with me right now I’ll make you regret the day you were born.”
Nat takes a deep breath like this is just as hard for her as it is for him. “He’s alive,” she says, and Tony can’t—he can’t, he’s having a heart attack or something, maybe a stroke, maybe both.
“How do you figure?” he grits, eyes closed now. Picturing Peter. Laughing, he was always laughing. Peter at seven chasing his puppy around with a stick, Peter at eight hiding under the covers with Tony, tracing the outline of the arc reactor with a finger, does it hurt?
Yes it hurts. It hurts so much. It hurts every goddamn day.
