Summary
Long ago. The land was overrun by darkness and shadow creatures.
But then a miracle happened. A magic candle shone a light to keep their village safe from the darkness and the evil shadow creatures.
Mirabel was often told the story. About how her mother would defend their town against these shadows. Together with her Tia Pepa and her Tio Bruno.
There was just one problem... Tio Bruno has been missing for the last fifteen years. Stolen by the shadow creatures... most likely killed.
One day Mirabel gets an idea. A terrible idea really. She can prove her worth by going to the forest herself and kill the creature that took her uncle all those years ago. However, the creature that Mirabel finds is not... Quite what she expected.
He looks terrifying yes. Like a monstrous human rat with green glowing eyes towering over Mirabel. But he's kind... He's sort of awkward. And is protecting the town with all of his might.Something here clearly isn't adding up.

It's not that Mirabel wants to push Bruno into spilling all of his secrets within five minutes of coming home, it's just that she does think that maybe, possibly it might be a good idea to mention to his sisters and his mother that he's been living in the walls before they dig his hideout out of the rubble, especially now that all of the kids already know.

The introductions pass by in a blur, and it is not until the farmer leaves that Harvey notices the posters on the clinic wall, where the door had slammed. They are for missing children: a girl and a boy, young enough to toddle alongside their parents. They both have auburn hair. The girl has green eyes, and the boy’s eyes are bright and lively.
Hm. He doesn’t recall seeing the posters before. Maybe Maru had put them up, and he’d simply forgotten. He is getting older, after all.
