“Like an experiment?” Will asked softly, clarifying what Mike had suggested. His hand tightened its grip on Mike's wrist. “Just to see what we like and stuff?”
Mike looked at his best friend. A wave of relief spread through his body, and he let out a breath he hadn't known he was holding.
“Yeah,” Mike nodded, “yeah, just to see what feels good.”
“Okay…Yeah,” Will whispered.
“Yeah?” Mike repeated. He had almost been expecting Will to say no, to call him crazy, to get mad and storm out of the room. He never expected this.
“Yeah,” Will confirmed; this time he said it with a smile on his face and a small giggle. “I like that idea.”

It's the summer of 1989, and the Party is hitting the road for a cross-country gap year in a beat-up 1977 Ford Econoline. Not wanting to spend the summer trapped in a van pretending to be someone he isn't, Mike comes out to Will as gay before they even leave Hawkins. But as they navigate the country in such cramped quarters, the line between "best friends" and something more begins to blur.
