Kirk glanced up at his friend. Spock seemed completely focused on reading the menu, so Kirk just kept looking.
In the past few months, he had been promoted to Captain, assigned command of the Enterprise for a five-year mission, and met the wonderful people who would become his crew in two months.
He almost expected to wake up-- there was no way that he could be that lucky.

“Michael was seen as too Human by her Captain to remain objective in a crisis. And is now too Vulcan for her mental state to be considered in her sentencing.” As a Vulcan Spock cannot use tone to show the special importance of specific statements, but he can alter the wording to empathize it. “Yet, she is not Vulcan enough to have had a clear mind in the crisis and made accurate, logical recommendations to her Captain.”
Since she became a part of their family Michael has always been too little and too much, all at the same time. As a child Spock believed that he had pushed part of his burden onto her. As an adult, Spock sees the full ramifications of the societal structure in the service which they have dedicated their lives to.

Kirk smiles lightly. “I bet it must feel nice then, going to visit your family. You get to put your hair down, relax a bit.”
“Vulcans do not feel anything, Captain.” Spock replies.
He is wrong in other ways. She does not correct them.
OR:
Spock has spent her entire life with a physical reminder that she will never be accepted. The Enterprise changes some things.

Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.
