In other words: cat man gets taken care of by child and then proceeds to have a mental breakdown when he realises he practiced eugenics

Until it wasn't his death. Somehow, the Fusang had drawn him back all those years ago, and now he was on a time crunch to try and prevent the worst. Without Shuanshuan, Shennong, and those that he trusted-- could he do it all over again? There’s something white resting in his palm. It looks like a piece of a paper. Was that what had been giving him so much grief? How did it get in his throat? After a moment of pondering, Yi pushes the question out of his mind; it doesn’t matter, now that it’s out. He’s fine, he’s not sick at all.
And that’s what he tells himself, even if every breath still feels oddly weighted and heavy.
