This. This was why they had to stop. In his worst moments, Regulus loathes the fact that Sober James all but ignores him most of the time, only bothering to text him on important holidays or birthdays. That is, until he’s reminded that Drunk James wants to ruin him— completely and thoroughly— by the casual cruelty of speaking his mind and expecting Regulus to go on peacefully with his life as if he didn’t just upend it entirely.

Barty knows it’s a bad idea every time he unblocks Evan's number and calls him at some late hour asking where he is and if he's busy. He knows it. He hears that little voice in the back of his head telling him not to; he hears the voices of his friends echoing in his head telling him not to.
It goes on and on, in circles, in circles. It’s Evan’s hands digging into Barty’s waist, trying to pull him closer to his body when that isn’t physically possible with their clothes on. It’s Barty unblocking Evan’s phone number every single time, calling him up. It’s Barty moaning against Evan’s mouth. It’s Evan picking up the phone every time. They just go round and round.
He doesn’t know why they can’t just– stop. It sounds so easy. Just stop. Don’t call Evan. Don’t get in the cab. Don’t kiss him, don’t kiss him, don’t kiss him. And then Barty does. And then he does. And he does, and he does, and he does.
This is the last time, he tells himself.

Regulus leaves his parents at 17, finding shelter with Sirius at the Potters' home somewhere along the rocky shores of Devon. What follows are the good years, then the unspeakable ones, and then, inexplicably—like a roach, a true Black—Regulus comes out the other end alive.
He just doesn't expect to stumble into the easy solace of James Potter and his five-year-old son.

“Wow,” James laughs. “You’ve got it bad.”
“Reckon? I’m not even sure why I’m telling you about all this. You’ve never had these problems, have you? You’re as straight as they come. You wear socks and sandals, for crying out loud!”
James’s eyes flick over to Lily, who’s highly amused over there on her perch but says nothing, clearly not wanting to callously out James to their son without his prior consent. Which is decent of her, of course, but he really could do with a little bit of assistance from his wife as he grapples for the right words.
“Erm,” James laughs nervously, because despite the awkwardness, maybe he really can help here. “Ah, no. Straight?” He clears his throat. “No, not so much.”
Harry’s brow furrows. “You and… Sirius?”
James shakes his head. “Not Sirius. But- ah, did he and Remus ever tell you the story of how they met?”
Harry looks yet more confused. “You went to uni with Remus, right? You introduced them?”
“Right,” James says, mouth curling up at the side. “I went to uni with Remus. I introduced them.”

“Serious,” the man replied. “Like the star,” he clarified, and Remus mentally scratched out 'Serious' and rewrote 'Sirius' in his head.
“The… star?” Marlene asked, her pen hovering over the cup as she hesitated.
“S-I-R-I-U-S,” Remus said. He stocked croissants into the display case, not looking up. “The Dog Star,” he added, “brightest star in the sky, actually. Visible from both hemispheres.” When he looked over, the man– Sirius– seemed surprised, his eyebrows raised as Remus spoke, and when Remus finished, he blinked a few times before smiling lopsidedly.
“Er– yeah,” he breathed a laugh. “That.” There was a baby on his hip. Somehow, it had taken Remus a second glance to notice that.

It's lovely up here; all meadows dotted with wildflowers, wind-beaten tracks criss-crossing this way and that through the fields, weaving inland to the pinewoods. The sun's hot on his back as he passes ramshackle stone walls, long since crumbled to piles of ancient rubble and scree, and then the path winds downwards, still following the line of the coast until Sirius finds himself outside an old white cottage, tucked away behind the hill with a rose garden that faces out to the sea.
Sirius moves to Cornwall for the summer and meets a rude, beautiful boy who is writing a book that may or may not be about dragons.
