Summary
Two weeks after the disaster of a conference that was meant to be his academic victory run and the successful start of the rest of his life as a molecular biologist, Ryland Grace escapes to one of Washington’s state parks. Hiding away in his twin brother’s cabin, Ryland has to come to terms with the fact that the life he worked so hard for had slipped right through his fingers because his ego had been larger than his logical brain, and now he’s haunted by a community of scientists and online enthusiasts yearning to run what little is left of his dignity into the ground.
But as a hike, one fuelled mostly by spite because obviously he didn’t learn his lesson just yet, goes south, he’s forced to call the rangers for help. And because life hates him, the ranger who told him not to wander into the woods is the one to take his call.
Something about ranger Simon’s disapproving and definitely disappointed look cuts deeper than he anticipated.

At the compound, the only books they were permitted consisted of a short list of theological books and a few children’s books that didn’t contradict Father’s teachings. Even those, Simon had read hundreds of times by the time he was a teenager. Having such unrestricted access to the books at the library had filled him with so much wonder; he took a new one home every shift. They offered him information about the new world he had suddenly found himself in, but they also provided him with a feeling of connection; the stories of thousands of characters were at his fingertips—full of hope, survival in the face of hardship, and, above all, love. He read nearly everything he could get his hands on, finding merit in every story no matter the genre or content.
Maybe it was fate that it was those very same books that led him to meet Ryland Grace.

Grace’s first response when Rocky told him that Eridian scientists had detected a human vessel orbiting Erid was: “That’s impossible.” The Hail Mary was humanity’s most scientifically advanced ship they’d ever produced, and it had the price tag to prove it. They wouldn’t have wasted all that money and resources just to retrieve a man they already considered dead. Besides, the Beetle probes wouldn’t even be close to reaching Earth yet, so how would they know he was on Erid?
But sure enough, when Rocky brought him the scans, Grace couldn’t deny the human-like structure of it, or the “SM-13” painted on the side in clearly English letters.
