Sam was too busy gaping with shock to say anything coherent, so Gabriel dove in and took over. “So, um, what was that?” he asked Castiel.
Castiel just blinked at him uncomprehendingly, raising one hand to touch his mouth with a puzzled frown.
“You and Dean,” Gabriel clarified. “What was that all about?”
“Dean. Uh. Dean hugged me,” Castiel said, his expression cool but his eyes shifting awkwardly away from the cat’s penetrating glare.
“With his mouth,” Gabriel drawled.
Castiel patted his lips again, guiltily, but then looked defiant as he stated firmly, “Yes. He hugged me with his mouth.”

Summary
On the day of his 29th birthday, Dean receives an email from his old nemesis: Michael Milton, the guy who got him kicked out of college and stole his girlfriend. Dean had come to apologise. To thank Cas. But pieces of Cas' broken heart were now on show, stabbing right through his beautiful face, slicing through Jimmy's muscles and skin. Dean could see it all now, pouring out through the jagged cuts; fear, shame, all that hurt—the lion's share of it of which Dean himself had caused. Cas was now wearing his pain on full display all over his body, like a shiny fucking outfit of the day.
Dean had never hated himself more. Even after torturing an endless stream of once-human souls in hell.
Cas let the pistol drop to the floor.
"Then what, Dean?" he choked out. "Why are you here?"
True-blue, wet eyes searched Dean's face with such wretched frustration, Dean couldn't take it a second longer. Had to make it go away, end the pain. Ironically, Dean realised, he did want to make everything stop for Cas—for both of them—even if only for a little while. Just not by means of a bullet.
How the hell do you make the whole world just stop?

Summary
Castiel once said that freedom was a length of rope. Now that the writer of their lives is no longer present to make known what he'd like them to do with it, the Winchesters (and all the tangents of their found family) see that rope unspool, out into endlessness.
There's a lot to grapple with, from untangling their own pasts (what they were made to do and what they would have done anyway,) to dealing with the fallout of the confrontation in the present, to looking at the future of a world without its god.
