Then quietly, as if he thinks that a whisper doesn't count, "If I do—If I do, I'm dead. They'll kill me, and I—Merlin, I'm a coward, James, I don't want to die, but I can't—I don't want to do it anymore."
Alternatively: Peter never wanted to join the death eaters for himself, he only did it because Dumbledore promised him it would help the Order to have a spy on the inside. But now it's gone too far, and Peter wants out. Only, this was always Dumbledore's plan. He just wasn't banking on James getting to Peter before the death eaters did.
