Timothy huffed a laugh then raised a hand. "Your mother didn't like you enough to keep you, Jason didn't like you enough to protect you, Dick didn't like you enough to stay, Bruce doesn't like you enough to hold a conversation with you, and don't even get me started on your grandfather." Every statement was accompanied by a finger counting each one.
Damian stumbled over his own feet, barely catching himself on the railing. He stared down at the darkness without seeing it as all his defenses failed him. He opened his mouth to rebuff him but all that came out was, "And you?"
"Do you really want to know about me right now?"

Summary
[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.
It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.
When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.
“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”
Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.
A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]

When he wakes up and claws his way out of the water, the sun has set, and the lights of his house are on. He is cold and wet and his lungs burn.
But most of all, Tim is alone.

“Todd,” Damian calls and when he gets no answer from Jason, he whimpers, “Drake.”
“I can't believe I'm saying this but he’s breaking my heart, dude."
“Shut up, don’t give in. It’s a trap.” Jason says. “It’s a trap —”
They lose both the battle and the war when Damian stops waiting for them and instead stumbles forward, almost drunkenly, and unceremoniously flops himself on Jason’s front, full-on crying against his chest.
“Jesus fuck, Baby-bat. Who do I have to kill?”
(Or the one where Jason and Tim come to the Manor on the early hours of the day after a long night of patrol and they find weird new kind of life form out of this world that cries with snot and all inside the Manor. It takes them some time, because they are both dumbasses, to convince themselves that's actually their little brother crying his eyes out.)

“Whatever you decide to do with Nightwing, I will be one hundred present behind you. It might not seem like much to you, but it’s mine, and now it’s yours too,” a hopeful smile stretches across Dick’s lips and Damian’s heart aches.
“I know you want to be Batman, to wear the proof of your legacy, but I- I would be honored if you wore my colors” Dick’s breath sputters and Damian becomes less and less sure that help would arrive at all.

Of all the things the Bat tries to keep out, magic is the easiest because magic wants to stay as far away from the city as possible. Zatanna called it a “cesspit of untamed ambient magic,” which was being nice even with calling it a cesspit. The last time some asked Constantine about Gotham he just laughed, lit his cigarette, and walked away.

“And you could have asked for more,” Hood shot back over his shoulder. He did not turn back around.
