“And your hair’s pretty, too,” Charles continued. “Always wondered if it’s as soft as it looks.” He stared up at Edwin with a dreamy expression on his face. “And your hands are pretty. I love watching those gestures you make while you speak and those, those, what are they called…?” He brought his hands together so the fingertips and thumbs touched. “Triangles, yeah. Those are pretty mint.”
Edwin chuckled. “Charles, I do believe you are quite intoxicated by now.”
“No, I’m not.” Charles frowned. “Ghosts can’t get drunk. You said so.”
Edwin raised his eyebrows. “You handled that enchanted wine bottle, remember?”
“Oh yeah…” Charles giggled. “I forgot about that.”

Charles stumbles across an artifact that lets ghosts experience intoxication. Edwin keeps him company until the effects wear off.

The Night Nurse had known this was coming, and knew that arguing was futile at this point. Yet still, she tried. “Your Finality, I must protest!”
“For once, I am in complete agreement.” Payne stared at his left wrist as though he could still see the band of dark gold encircling it.
“If she’s following us everywhere on cases, that’s going to make our work a lot harder.” Rowland looked earnestly at the Principal.
The Principal smiled serenely. “I am certain you shall all adjust admirably.”

The Principal employs restrictive measures to ensure the Night Nurse won’t abandon her new post. No one at the agency is happy about this.

“I’d like to make amends,” he blurted out before Edwin could say anything else.
“I beg your pardon?” Edwin looked caught off guard, and the Cat King suppressed a surge of triumph. It was nice to know he could still surprise the detective.
“It’s like you said, a spell for a spell is fair play. You put a binding spell on one of my cats, and I put a caging spell on you. But I also put a truth spell on you, so it seems only fair for you to reciprocate.” When Edwin didn’t react, he added, “I’m offering you the chance to ask me any question and compel me to answer truthfully.”
Edwin frowned, clearly skeptical. “Any question at all?”
“That’s what I said.”

“What are you reading?”
“Scooby-Doo.” The girl reached for her book, and now Shelby recognized the characters on the front cover. “I read somewhere that mysteries can bring comfort during difficult times, and these are my favorite.”
“Why mysteries?”
“Because they deliver on a promise. A crime will be committed, or a murder, and then it gets solved. In Scooby-Doo, there’s some kind of supernatural phenomena that gets investigated. But they always solve the mystery in the end.” Her face brightened. “Did you know that during the London Blitz, when they set up makeshift libraries in the Underground shelters, the most popular books were Agatha Christie mysteries? When the world is falling apart, people can find comfort in stories where justice triumphs and everything makes sense.”
“I see.” Shelby was not entirely certain how she had come to be standing in a cemetery discussing murder mysteries with a strange girl, but it was honestly better than most of the conversations she’d participated in recently.

Summary
“What in the world do you think you're doing?” Edwin asks, hands on his hips in the way Crystal says makes him look like a ‘cunty British Karen.’
This startles the man into dropping the shard of glass onto the pavement with a clink. “Fuck! Can't a guy trash his fucking ex's car ‘n peace?”
Edwin, for some reason, is startled by the man's appearance. The first thing he sees are black-lined eyes the color of honey, the golden hue almost glowing in the streetlight. Edwin’s love of mysteries, unfortunately for him, is only rivaled by his love of pretty boys. And while his plan to confront the vulgar vandal was not exactly fool-proof from the start, Edwin realizes he has severely miscalculated how the rest of this interaction would go, because the vandal is fucking gorgeous.

Edwin is a grad student who is sick of his friends trying to help him get over his crush on Charles by setting him up on dates. Thomas is hellbent on destroying his cheating ex's car right outside Edwin's window. And Edwin is having none of it...until he learns that Thomas' ex is actually Simon, his first-boyfriend-turned-bully.
Edwin needs a fake boyfriend. Thomas needs an alibi. What could possibly go wrong?
