Summary
In many ways, things are the same as ever.
It’s only… Well, back when Merlin still had things like secrets, or privacy, or self-respect, he would have thought that of the secrets, the magic would have been the one to truly catch Arthur’s interest.
But no. It’s the other secret that Arthur picks and plucks at.

“This isn’t how I was expecting my evening to go, huh?”
“No, I’m sure it wasn’t,” Cas replies.
Dean’s eyes drink him in. Dean doesn’t bother to hide it. “What are you doing here? Haven't seen you ‘round in a while.” The last of his words have a sarcastic blade to them in a way that they never would have before Hell, and he’s still getting used to the metallic tang in his mouth.
Cas’s eyes narrow. “I suppose I had a… hunch that you may be in need of company.”
or the one where s10 cas time travels back to give comfort to dean right after he was gripped tight and raised from perdition

Summary
Slowly, Mystery Man raises his head. And when his eyes meet Dean’s again, they are so full that Dean is nearly leveled by it. Just. There’s love there, affection, fondness, all in that haunted cornflower blue. They’re greedy, too, like they’re consuming every detail. Dean forgets to breathe. “You sure this guy ain’t dead?” he manages. “Cause you’re looking at me like the last time you saw his mug was ten years ago.”
Mystery Man inhales sharply but doesn’t so much as blink. “He’s very much alive. He made pancakes this morning.” No further elaboration.
“Right…” Dean says a little awkwardly. “Well, since this is happening, apparently, what’s your name?”
Now, Mystery Man hesitates, frowns. Finally, he says, “My name is Cas.”
or the one where dean is at a bar in 2005 and he gets a visit from a stranger who feels familiar but he cant figure out why

Summary
“So what’s up with- Dude, again?” Sam’s voice rings through the room incredulously.
Dean grunts in response.
“You can’t possibly still be tired. Like, I feel like this should be physically impossible.”
“Tell that to my melatonin levels.”
“How do you know what melatonin is?”
Dean does his best to roll his eyes under the cover of his eyelids. “Jesus, Sam, I’m not an idiot. Will you shut up so I can sleep?”
He hears Sam huff. “Ya know, if you wanted to nap, you could always use that thing you have called a bed.”
“Not the same,” Dean grumbles. His body doesn’t get all loose when he’s laying in his bed watching horror movies. The synapses that slow their firing contentedly seem to be wired to that same invisible bodily response of the outside world, and apparently being in the openness of his family’s space turns his brain into mush. “Now unless someone’s dying, I’m beggin’ you to shut up.”
or the one where the whole family is together, dean finds enough peace to take some naps, and he's not sure he'll ever figure out how to say those three big words to cas

Summary
How can he say more than the words that don’t even capture a fraction of the pain. You were dead. Three words that are too weak to hold up the agony. Cas, you were dead, and you weren’t coming back. I know because I burned the body.
“Okay, alright. You don’t need to speak. It’s alright- I’ll- I’ll just-” and then Cas is holding up a glowing hand that he moves over the vague shape of Dean’s body under the tangle of his bedsheets. “I can’t sense anything wrong. Nothing malignant, or even duress of natural causes. I don't- I don’t know what’s happening.”
Cas, man, it’s actually not as bad as it seems. I think I’m having a panic attack.

Summary
“Well, it’s a silly thing to be worried about. The way that you enjoyed the company of women earlier on in your life has nothing to do with the way we are now. And, besides-” Cas’s voice drops to a shy murmur, matching the bashful, knitting rhythm of the way he’s currently playing with Dean’s fingers- “I think I’d like to hear about it.”
Alright, Dean likes to think he’s pretty good at handling surprises, but he’s not even sure if his eyeballs are still in his skull at this point with the way they’re popping out.
“Hear about the way I enjoyed the company of women,” Dean says like he’s waiting for the punchline.
“Why not? What’s wrong with that?”
“Cas, normal people don’t wanna hear about their boyfriend’s exes.”

Summary
“Right,” Dean says. He nods to himself and tries to believe that Cas means it when he says he’s going to stay. “Right, and Jack, he brought you back?”
Cas smiles softly. “Yes, it took him time to figure out how to use his powers in a way that he could reach me, but he succeeded. We had our own reunion and discussion before he brought me here.” He looks back at Dean. “You have, apparently, been quite the talk of Heaven.”
Dean frowns and finally pulls away. He would be worried, maybe is a little bit, because when do they ever really catch a fucking break, but Cas is looking at him with something so fragile in his eyes. Something light and hopeful and sad all at the same time.
“What’d I do now?”
Cas looks at him like his heart is breaking. “You prayed my name to every angel in Heaven for six days straight.”
or the one where dean grieves in his own way until jack swings a little power to give dean another shot at that love confession

Summary
Dean did a lot of thinking about when and how he would get Cas back. Months of it, actually, stretching into a year, because while Sam and Eileen were settling into their new lives, Dean was stuck. He was stuck in a faraway corner of the bunker, dark and empty and hollow, ringing with the sound of a vibrating phone.
So when he falls to his knees in that same room, exhausted, hurting, breathless, and he feels a hand on his shoulder and looks up to see Cas, he realizes that he doesn't have a single clue about what to do now. Getting Cas out had been easy--actually, it'd been the opposite of that--but the planning of it, the methodical desperation of one attempt after the other had been a familiar rhythm. It'd been soothing almost, solid, something to focus on that wasn't Cas's eyes, watery and jubilant in a way Dean hadn't ever seen that up close on anyone, let alone Cas.
And now Cas is pulling him to his feet, and Dean's stumbling, and he instinctually grabs Cas's arm, and his hand lights up with a fire that he isn't prepared for.
"Hello, Dean."

Summary
“Dream summoning?” Sam repeats as Dean floors it. “Cas, most of the stolen stuff works for dreamwalking. What do you mean, summoning?”
Over the phone, Cas answers, “With the proper enclosed space and spell ingredients, he’ll be able to manifest the contents of his last dream. They won’t last long, an hour at the most, but the manifested ingredients only need to be real for enough time to carry out the second spell. And I’d be very surprised if the contents of that dream didn’t include back-up. He could manifest an entire army. Whatever you do, don't let him bleed on the offering.”
“Got it,” Dean confirms, taking a turn far more quickly than his baby wants. “I’ll just tackle the guy. He doesn’t bleed, we’re good.”

Naturally, Dean bleeds instead.

The plan boils down to three basic steps:
1. Raise demon-slaying spirit (nobody tell Bobby).
2. Sic it on Yellow Eyes to save their possessed dad.
3. Cross their fingers and pray that Sam's translation was accurate, and the demon-slaying spirit will leave them alone to go kill more demons.(Spoiler alert: Number three doesn't work out so well.)

“The nurses told me that you’re not taking your hormone supplements,” Cas says.
Dean huffs, yanking the blanket with his uninjured arm, relishing the pain: he wanted to feel anything other than the gradually building chaos boiling inside his head. It feels almost like oblivion. Inevitable. The terror will freeze him up so badly he won’t even be able to scream.

Summary
Dom! Castiel and sub! Dean are federal agents who have to go to a training BDSM resort, to attend a number of workshops as an undercover couple.
---------
“Are you sure you’re fine with this?” he asks weakly, hating how shaky he sounds. “I’m still not sure about putting you—”
“Cut it out, Novak. This is not a real thing, and even if it was, I’d break that pretty nose of yours before you could treat me like I can’t make my own decisions. Now just dom up and do the thing, or if you can’t bear it, hand it to me and I’ll put it on myself.”
Castiel can’t do that. It’s too important, fake or real, and no sub deserves to put a collar on themselves; Castiel would die before watching Dean put a collar on himself. “I can bear to put a collar on you, Winchester. Now come closer.”

Summary
“You can’t,” Dean says, sitting at the first table of the library. It’s expansive in front of him in his solitude. It’s too big for a single person.
Cas looks over at the words. Across the room, he frowns.
“I don’t understand,” he prompts, voice low and gentle. Quiet, like they were in a real library.
But his eyes are narrowed. His eyebrows drawn down in suspicion. The book he’s holding stays opened at chest level, and Cas doesn’t lower it when he speaks.
“You know,” Dean says coldly. He can’t meet Cas’s eyes, so he watches his clasped hands on the table. “What you said. You can’t.”

Summary
But the thing is, as he gets closer, he has to blink his eyes to make sure he’s seeing things right. Because that’s definitely Jimmy’s body slumped over against the trunk of one of the apple trees, but floating above him is- well, it’s a floating light, a sphere with a one-foot diameter, just hanging out at Dean’s chest level. Dean approaches it carefully with a furrowed brow and half-raised hackles.
“Cas?” Dean prompts slowly. “Is that-”
And the orb is glowing out sweet and white like it could easily be used to keep away the dark in a child’s nursery. It’s so welcoming. Like Dean could just reach out, out, and catch that gentleness in his hands without any sort of consequence.
“Hello, Dean,” the orb hums.

Nothing happens at first. Nothing happens except Dean feels warm all over, like the sun-baked ground, warm in a wave from the top of his head to his toes; nothing happens except the tension that has been building up in Dean for three months, for a year, for his entire life snaps like a string being cut and he slumps forward, bonelessly relaxed.
He realizes distant, as if through a dream.
This is what it feels like. This is Cas touching his soul.
