Summary
When he was young—between the ages of eight and eleven, hovering on the brink of puberty —he used to have these dreams. The proper term for them, he has since learned, was night terrors, a common occurrence among children at the onset of adolescence. He would wake struck by the most profound sense of fear but found himself unable to remember what could possibly have caused it. And sometimes later he remembered the dreams, but they were just that—dreams, distant and distinctly removed from reality. It was mostly the fear that he remembered, sharp and clear as a cold knife against the skin.

Summary
It all ran together. Maybe it had been running together for a long time. He kind of lost track of it after a while; he had a little tablet in his room that would show him a calendar, some news, the weather. He didn't even look at the calendar, though. Calendars were for people who had something to expect, some event in their future to look forward to. Either he'd forgotten what that was like, or he'd never known in the first place.
There had been a moment, in the water with Steve -- the first time or the second, he wasn't sure -- where his wet gear and Steve's dead weight had dragged them both down. They had rested together in the swirling silt at the bottom of the river, and Bucky had looked up through the water and the falling debris and seen the hazy light of the sky shining through.
It had been strange. Everything happening around them, but this moment of silence and stillness. Sometimes the feeling Bucky had now reminded him of that.

Lenny had expected that this late he’d be rousing the man from sleep, or at least find him undressed for the night, but instead the Prime Minister was still dressed in the smart, funereal sort of suit Lenny had met him in, with that same self-satisfied smirk on his face. “I almost didn’t recognize you; your attire is — should we say — a bit different.”
Lenny raised an eyebrow. “But of course,” the Prime Minister continued, “how could I not recognize the Holy Father? His beautiful blue eyes; his soft, round mouth. Please, will you come inside?”

He had headphones on, and she didn't want to startle him. She found herself hovering in the door, until finally he twisted, his face melting from an expression of absorbed concentration into disbelief. "Beck?" he said, pulling the headphones off, throwing them down, tossing aside his pencil.
"Surprise," said Becky, giving him the best smile she could manage. He came right over -- he'd gotten taller, too; it had apparently been a hell of a late growth spurt. Before they'd been just about of a height, and now the top of her head hardly came up to his shoulder. She didn't have a lot of time to think about that, though -- he hugged her, and he was big and solid and warm in a way he had never used to be.

Bucky tried to say Steve's name, but all he could say was, "I feel like I know the artist," and Steve wasn't paying attention. He was tapping the brush against his mouth, looking forward at the painting. The liquid rose, around his ankles, his thighs, his chest. It wasn't cold; it was hot.
Eventually Steve looked back at Bucky again. He just looked sad, now. Disappointed, maybe. The red liquid lapped around his chin. "If you're not having a good time," he said, his voice muffled and distorted as the paint crept into his mouth, "we can leave."
