As a professional dominant, Sunday finds no shortage of IPC executives who want to give up control for a little while, and are willing to pay well for the privilege. He's very good at maintaining professional boundaries, and he's never once gotten attached.
Turns out there's an exception to every rule, and for Sunday, that exception is Aventurine of Strategems.

The awe in Ratio's tone sends Aventurine hiding behind his bangs with a defensive snort. From here, Ratio takes note of the hitch of Aventurine's shoulders, the tenseness of his grip on his glass. "Professor, I saw a Xianzhou martial artist snatching mung beans out of the air the other day on my reels. It's not that impressive. Plenty of human-shaped things can do what I did tonight."
"On the contrary. Those are individuals in an otherwise mundane species, and are rare even among the elite. This would be an evolutionary design specific to Sigonian biology, or perhaps even further into the Avgins." Ratio leans in, completely serious, ready to lecture as always when he sees it. Aventurine's whole body has stiffened. His drink trembles in his left hand, and his cards sit on the table forgotten. He won't look at Ratio.
Ratio's words die, his train of thought derailed.

“I need you to marry me.”
To escape a bureaucratic shitstorm brought on by his less-than-complete onboarding paperwork, Aventurine comes to Ratio with a proposal: stay married for a period of two years, then get an easy, quickie divorce once Aventurine's residency status is secure.
Only, it's not enough for them to simply get married; the marriage has to look legitimate too. Which is fine. Aventurine can act the part. Except, he's not really acting. Not anymore. And this last-minute trip to visit Ratio's family in Bumfuck Nowhere, Veritas Prime as Ratio's newly minted fiancé is threatening to prove it.

The self-made Avgin without any formal education, invited to speak to a classroom full of impressionable young Fortune Academy students.
But what he hadn't counted on was his TA. Fortune Academy's top student had been assigned to be his assistant for the semester, helping him grade essays and passing out papers in class. Sunday Oak did all this and more without complaint, a polite but indifferent expression on his stupidly handsome face.

In a weird way, he feels as though he’s conned Aventurine, because if Aventurine knew the truth - that Veritas is horribly and unceasingly attracted to him - he would never have approached him with this proposition.
But he doesn’t know, and now Veritas has to pretend that he’s ever had a romantic relationship before. He would say that it can’t be that hard - billions of people have had successful romantic relationships without prior research or experience - but Veritas is keenly aware that he is not like even billions of other people.
Aventurine approaches Veritas with a teensy, tiny proposition - that they pretend to be a couple for the sake of Aventurine's reputation on his newest Harmony-worshipping planetary aquisiton.

For all Ratio tried to say he didn't believe in Aventurine's luck, he was hanging on to it like a prayer. He would surely be found alive inside the rubble, or perhaps he conveniently stepped outside the embassy before the bombs went off. Maybe his shuttle hadn't even made it to Xin-41 after all, and he was currently crash-landed on some distant moon, awaiting rescue.
His eyes were red and dry when, hours later, they finally released the definitive list of victims.

A mark only appears once fate's already decided two people are going to meet - soulmates, guaranteed, long before they actually cross paths. From there, each of them carries whatever the other feels most intensely, with nothing else to go on.
Ratio's had his mark for years, and by now can nearly set his watch by how often it goes off. Aventurine's had his for just as long, and has never let himself wonder for more than a few seconds who might be stuck with him.
