Waking up with a headache is pretty high up on Haitham’s personal ladder of annoyances. Waking up with a headache and no memories of the previous night isn’t a covered variation, but it must be two or three steps above, at most. But waking up with a headache and no memories of the previous night and the half-naked form of the General Mahamatra himself sleeping next to him, in his own bed? That doesn’t belong on the ladder. Or maybe it would, if the ladder shot up into space and reached the moon. In that case, this third option would be right up there, frolicking on the lunar surface.
His head hurts. Cyno is sleeping next to him. Those are the facts, but there’s no correlation between them. No discernible cause. All he has is the glaring question: what happened last night?

“Is he hurting?” he asks, voice dipping sharply on the last syllable.
Amber tries to read his expression: that stony, unshakeable surface, and the tremors that lurk underneath. “No,” she responds, as gently as possible.
There’s a taut silence. Zhongli looks back at her, and as she meets that gaze, she thinks of her yeye’s stories, stories of his homeland and its god-protector: that exalted figure who stood like a pillar through the storm, who conquered fear at every battle, who time and time again stared down death unflinching. And as Amber remembers these stories, it terrifies her to think: what could make someone like that afraid?
“Take me to him,” Morax says finally. “I must see him.”
