Summary
When he goes home and can't sleep, he dips into the liquor he'd inherited from Himeno and looks through his recipe binder, picking through pink and yellow pages for this and this and this; quick pickled peppers, a salty pork soup they'd made for his brother, a stained flashcard with a cramped pastry recipe. It isn't much, Aki thinks as he looks down at the small collection he was able to filter out, and he finds himself repeating this out loud the next day in the park when he holds out a bag of tupperware.
"But hopefully they'll remind you of-"
'Home,' he'd almost said, but Angel doesn't seem to notice. He'd already accepted the bag and was peering inside pensively.
To Aki, his partner's shine of excitement was undeniable. He allowed himself a small moment of accomplishment before he started to worry if maybe this had been a mistake.
"Thank you," Their voice is a bit breathless, their surprise melting into something tender and altogether too soft for Aki to look at directly. So he looked down at their shoes instead before he found himself digging out a cigarette and hiding to the side to light it.

Summary
“Can I stay here tonight?”
Her words come out breathless, strangled by the knots of grief and relief welling in her throat. She almost immediately wants to retract her words in embarrassment, but she can't bear the thought of going home now. She doesn't think she could stand the silence of the too-big house, how the empty spaces were suffocating and denser than fog. If she had to lie in bed and pretend she didn't hear the scraping of the washer machine being dragged in and out of place as her father slunk in and out of his warehouse, she thinks the sinkhole in her chest would swallow her entirely.
“Of course, kiddo. Of course.”

Summary
As Gillion walks past his barrel to perch on the edge of the spare cot, he realizes 'empty' isn't the right word. He feels shattered. His hands are distant, discordant and foreign to him as he watches them resting atop his thighs in half-curled fists, thin fingers furling around nothing. He watches as his muscles contract, claws emerging mechanically before retreating back into their sheath. He acknowledges the sinkhole in his stomach, a pit he'd been aware of and ignoring for the last few days in favor of remaining in a functioning state. He's not sure when it happened. Maybe when he heard the original prophecy, maybe when he had to repeat it out loud. Maybe it came from seeing that statue outside of the old bar, or maybe it'd appeared much farther back, when a similar pit had opened in Chip's chest, in that throne room. Gillion tries not to think of the statue, of its blank face and moss-covered muscles. He tries not to think of the way his own body has strayed from that image, of how soft and round he is now in comparison to what he'd looked like before he'd been banished.
The bed shakes as someone sits down behind Gillion, and then Chip is knocking gently on his temple.
"Helloooo? Anyone home?"

Summary
"How much has he told you about the Undersea?"
Chip doesn't respond immediately, but when he does he sounds almost apprehensive. "Not much. We know he was raised by some weird group of old people, and that he was pretty messed up. I don't know how much of it he understands though, and.. I don't think he likes talking about it. It always makes him cry, and you know how he feels about that,"
Edyn doesn't smile at that like he does, but she understands, better than Chip himself does most likely. Gillion had been an easy crier when they were younger, less so after he was taken but still he was quick to tears. He cried when he was frustrated, when he laughed too hard, when he got to see Edyn. He'd bawled when he got Pretzel. But she remembers how she'd realized that crying became something he'd reserved for her, for when they were alone. She can't imagine what he'd done with himself and all his loose tears without her when she'd stopped being able to see him. She can't very well imagine anyone else wiping them away or laughing with him.
She doesn't have the words to explain that though, so instead she settles on a short: "I do."

Summary
Chip is shirtless, with a dry shirt balled up in his arms and held up to his nose. He has wedged himself between the toilet and the bathtub, legs sprawled clumsily before him and back awkwardly propped against the wall of the tub in what can only be described as a breakneck angle. His eyes and nose are red, tinged pink with alcohol and tears that balance on the edge of his eyelashes. His newly regrown curls hang limply around his face, framing the round cheeks and spotty skin. His ears and neck are growing as red as his nose, and his eyes are dilated so much you can barely even tell they're brown.
Drunk Chip is a sopping-wet mess.

Summary
It wasn’t just Gilan. It seemed that everyone had been shaken by the young ranger’s beating. No one in their weary downtrodden group were making attempts to engage with the others in conversation anymore, and the air between them had turned sour. It was almost if the desperation and finality of their situation was beginning to set in.
Any one of them could die on a whim.
. . . . .
Or, the trip to Maashava and the subsequent imprisonment of the party was more brutal than portrayed originally in Erak’s Ransom. For Halt and Gilan in particular, the trip is less then pleasant and both face doubts and worries about the past and future.

Summary
Martin loses time. This used to happen to him when he was younger. His thoughts would blur and without him realising, hours would have passed. No one has ever caught him doing it before.
Jon catches him.
(After they leave London, the Lonely doesn’t leave Martin completely. It clings to him the way the Eye clings to them all.
But that’s okay. When Martin gets lost in his head, Jon is there to bring him back.)
