    “Ah, what’s happened to you?” she asks gently.
    For the briefest moment, Erik thinks she’s speaking to him, that she’s seen him in his shadowy hiding place and wants to share some of his burden. This pretty little thing would offer him comfort in the dark, and then prance back to the golden world she inhabits.
    But no, the odd little thing is talking to the gears he’d sabotaged.
    She drops inelegantly to the floor and brings a set of tools out of the satchel she has tossed over her shoulder.
    Humming once more, she sets to work.
    It takes Erik a long time to make sense of what he’s seeing. Not a stagehand, then. Not even the Mécanicien he’d been picturing but instead une Mécanicienne. How unexpected.
