See, here’s the thing: Duke isn’t ignorant about his place in the family. There's too much history between everyone for them to possibly consider the guy who's been around for a couple of months, at the longest, as a priority.
If there are other options, he’s never going to be anybody’s first pick. It’s upsetting, but it is what it is.
That is, of course, unless they run out of other options completely.

Summary
The civilian laughs, helping the other women to their feet, “What are you, some kinda teenage assassin? Kid ninja?”
Duke can't help the bark of surprised laughter that's pulled from him, slumping the henchmen against the back of the cargo container with more force than necessary — which they deserve. His laughter hangs onto his words when he helps the rest of the women out the container one by one, heart tight and heavy when they take deep breaths of fresh air, despite the stench of Gotham's river. It, hilariously, smells like freedom.
“Nah, just a kid from the Narrows,” Duke says with warmth.
(The one day Duke decides to take a day off from being Signal — everything goes wrong.)

Duke Thomas had been with the family for six months. Officially, at least. Had known them for at least a year before that. Age sixteen, now, he had reluctantly allowed them to place him under their custody after being on his own for a while. It was comfortable enough. He'd been content to be fostered, even though the offer of adoption remained extended.
He was given independence. Independence that he craved. It had been his most important condition upon joining: that he be a Bat, but not a Robin. Gotham's solo daytime vigilante.
It was just...professional boundaries, Duke told himself. Bruce was Batman, and Batman was like, his mentor-supervisor-vigilante landlord. Or something. Not his dad. He had a dad. And not really a paternal figure, either, like how Steph and Babs viewed him.
He liked the guy. Just...didn't need a dad. He was fine. Chilling.
(Until he wasn't).

Summary
'It's just another tiny Arkham breakout,' they said. 'It's only Mr. Freeze and Firefly,' they said.
Well, clearly ‘ they’ (Steph and Damian that is) were full of shit, because now Duke was awake at 5am, freezing half to death because one half of Gotham was a frozen wasteland, while the other was bathed in flames.
Or: There's an Arkham breakout, and Duke suffers for it.

Summary
Nightwing drops his weapons and pounds against Superman’s chest with his fists. When he finally stops, Superman pulls the vigilante into a tight hug. The elder Leaguer cards his fingers through Nightwing’s hair. “I've got you,” he promises quietly.
The young hero pulls away just long enough to ask in a strained, desperate voice, “Why is he doing this?”
Dinah lowers her eyes. All she seems to do lately is intrude on Nightwing’s private moments. She slips back out the door, guilty to know just how broken up Nightwing is.
As much as they try to hide it, Dinah sees the strain on Nightwing and Flamebird's relationship lately. How the newest Robin fits in, she's not sure.

Living in Gotham wasn’t nice. It wasn’t fun. But Percy was alive, even though now he only had ten dollars to his name after spending some money on a box of plastic water bottles so he didn’t have to resort to drinking harbour water.
Little by little, Percy began to get his bearings and become familiar with the city.
Then the vigilante guy in the bat costume and his neon sidekick broke into the warehouse Percy was staying in.

Nine-year-old Percy Jackson runs away to avoid being killed by monsters like Sally and Gabe, accidentally winding up in Gotham. Bruce's "child with a traumatic backstory" senses activate and Percy gets adopted. It's a nonlinear story, with half of each chapter taking place before the Second Gigantomachy, and half of them taking place after, when Percy returns to Gotham.

MK's no good, very bad, dimension travel experience. It does not matter that there are superheroes or vigilantes or whatever. It doesn't make the poor excuse of a vacation any better, nor does it excuse the very much illegal stalking they are participating in. He just really wants to go home and sleep for a hundred years, and preferably never have to acknowledged his ever-growing identity crisis, or that yes he is a celestial monkey shapeshifter, thank you very much.
